Show NOTABLE CAREER OF W. GARDNER The following biography of Commander Com-mander Gardner, taken from a biographical bio-graphical number of the Congresslon al Directory: Washington Gardner of Albion, Mich., was born on a farm In Morrow Mor-row county, Ohio, on February 16, 1845. When he was 16 years of age he entered the Union army, serving in the ranks of the Sixty-fifth Ohio infantry in-fantry from October, 1S61, to December, Decem-ber, 1S65. He was severely wounded wound-ed in a battle at Resaca, Ga. He received a degree of bachelor of arts at Ohio Weslcyan university in 1870 ! and studied theology in Boston university uni-versity in 1870-71. In 1S76 was grad-uated grad-uated from the Albany Law school ! with a degree of bachelor of laws. After practicing law for one year in Grand Rapids, Mich., he entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Epis-copal church, serving for twelve years. In 1S88 he was made professor pro-fessor and public lecturer for Albion Al-bion college. In 1S94 he was appointed ap-pointed secretary of state in Michigan Michi-gan by Governor John T. Rich to fill out an unexpired term. Subsequently Subse-quently he was twice nominated by acclamation and elected to succeed himself. He was first elected to the fifty-sixth congress and served for twelve consecutive years as representative rep-resentative from his district in Michigan, Michi-gan, retiring In 1911. He was elected elect-ed commander-in-chief of the Grand Array of the Republic at the national encampment in Chattanooga last year. Shortly afterward he commenced hie present tour of the United States in tho interests of the G. A. R. and to promote a feeling of patriotism. no |
