All hope has been given up for the brilliant young aviator, Gustavp Hamel, who attempted to cross the English chan nel In a fog last Saturday to reach Hendon with a new machine with which he intended the same day to compete in the aerial derby. Cruisers and destroyers have swept the channel In every direction for two days, using searchlights at night and exhaustive searches have been made on both coasts. In these coast guards have aided, and no Blgn has been found cither of the aviator or his nia hinc It. Is considered probable that his I new and almost untrlorl machine may have developed some weakness or de-jfect de-jfect which caused the disaster.
