the hotel is being enlarged nearly double its present size and anda a new ne camp dining room Is being built which will accommodate nearly SOO 00 extra diners ONE DAY DRIVE Ogden people are fortunately situated from the park in that the drive to West Yellowstone can be made In one day In contrast to this one meets tourists most every hour from points as far ar as Florida New NewYork NewYork NewYork York Massachusetts and New Hampshire who have traversed the con con- continent continent to witness the wonders of the park No matter how ho far they have traveled all say they feel well repaid for their trip At Old Faithful on Monday night July 24 24 fully persons watched the famous geyser perform while the flood lights from the hotel were played play d upon It There were also nearly visitors lined up at the bear feeding grounds near Old Faithful earlier in the eve eve- ning Throughout the park at other camps the crowds were as great and in order to secure accommodations it was necessary to arrive there early At Canyon Canon camp where the upper and lower falls of the Yellow Yellow- Yellowstone Yellowstone Yellowstone stone river and the Grand canyon are the main attractions many tour tour- tourists tourists tourIsts remained for several days in order to visit all the nearby points of or interest Camps and hotels were taxed to the limit and one had to appear early in order to get into the dining room without waiting for tables to be vacated If a person is now contemplating a trip around the loop and has no camping equipment it will pay him well to tomake tomake tomake make reservations ahead This can be done in each eath camp for the next day at atno no extra expense and insures in ures a party of or cabins or hotel rooms when they arrive Hungry tourists line up before dining room roam doors more than an hour before they open The dining room is then filled and others have to wait walt until the tables become gradually vacated Numbers umbers are then given out but and as they the are are- called eight persons enter for each table At Canyon Canon camp our party was as about 15 minutes late for the opening hour and was handed extra table No 26 As one of or the party remarked at Old Faithful When the dinner bell rings everybody rushed to the dining room just like pigs I know kno because I was the first one there BITTEN BY BEARS Bears can be seen in the park at almost any point Feeding grounds are provided at all the camps where scores of ot browns and blacks can be seen feeding on the refuse from hotels A ranger always alwa's stands guard with a rifle rille to see that no tourist bites any of the bears or other other- otherwise otherwise otherwise wise teases them At Old Faithful the ranger remarked that he has not been compelled comp lIed to shoot a tourist this year although some visitors have Insisted upon trying to play with them too roughly Almost every party that goes through the tho park part has at least one experience with bears At Fishing bridge the men folks in our party felt the call of o the the- stream and got out fishing tackle The wives went up to the store and bought some peanuts They were walking down the road toward the tho river when an automobile a passed and a woman pointed behind them They looked around and saw a big bear lumbering along a few steps In the rear sniffing the air A man yelled Hes fies after your peanuts Needless to say the bear had full sway to the peanut sack within wl a second and he had plenty of room on the road to eat them Coming down the divide from Mammoth we encountered a hold holdup up bear a tame type of animal which gets in the road and Insists upon automobiles stopping until the occupants come forth with some s me goodies This bear had two small cubs All stood on their hind feet across the road road- signalling the cars to stop They would get up on the running board and beg for sweets The mother mother- appeared friendly enough but insisted that everyone keep their hands off ot her cubs which she closely watched at all times Though the bears are considered tame more than seventy tourists have been bitten this year and were treated at camp hospitals it was said Bites were mostly caused when tourists held meat in their hands and the bears wanted bigger bites than the meat provided pro Several others were bitten on legs when they went close to snap pictures and the bears found round that cameras were not good to eat cat It doesn't pay to get too close to them unless you have something good to eat to keep the attention of the bear from the calf caU o ot your our leg NAME STILL GOOD Geysers In the park are now rather disappointing as the only one ono that can be depended de ended upon Is Old Faithful This geyser g now plays every hour and five minutes and rarely varies more than a few seconds Giant geyser which shoots feet in the air has been inactive this summer probably because of stage fright from too many man tourists Hand Hand- Handkerchief kerchief pool where one puts In la a handkerchief and it comes out clean in about five minutes is plugged up with soiled linen deposited by campers who wanted to save laundry bills and a sign warns that the park officials are not responsible for tor loss There are plenty of ot smaller geysers and hot pots playing in the vicinity of Old Faithful and others in Norris geyser basin But a person Is fortunate to see an eruption of or any geyser larger than Old Faithful Roads are in fn such good condition that the entire trip can be made in five fire days and every point In Jn the park visited d by automobile and walking side trips Fishing good Is good In the Madison 1 river and the per per- permit mit to enter the park serves as a fishing license Cabins at the camps cost 3 a day and accommodate two persons Meals cost 1 and in order to secure a cabin two meal tickets must be purchased The hotels cost from 10 to 11 a l day for a room Meals must be taken separately They fhe cost plenty plent Hundreds who stay at the hotels however eat at the camp dining rooms and anel come over at night to enjoy the dancing and campfire programs When a person verson talks to tourists from eastern states many ninny of whom have saved for years to make Yellowstone and feel well repaid one wonders how ho there is any person in Utah who has not made the trip or is contemplating doing so this summer |
