Show SALT LAKERS ANGERED OVER lu CAL SUCCESS claim the ogden are attempting to steal their reputation from thursdays standard apparently a great amount of feeling is being aroused among a limited number of salt lake people over the proposed trip to Jp ortland of the osden tabernacle choir this mornings salt anke herald contains an interview with professor avan stephens conductor of the salt lake choir in which he objects to the ogden choir using namo ot the mormon tabernacle choir on its trip to portland in august the claim being that the salt lake choir is the only mormon choir known outside ot utah they having earned that title through the trips taken outside the state whole article is full of a spirit hardly characteristic of the magnanimity shown by mr stephens in his past attitude toward musical organizations and musicians he has had a reputation for broad mindedness but this interview breathes a spirit entirely foreign to that shown in the past Is mr stephens a little envious 0 tho artistic work of this excellent organization Is it not an inopportune time to display those feelings the following interview with professor joseph ballantyne director of the ogden choir defines correctly the position of the home choir 1 I am extremely sorry that any ill feeling should arise over the trip our choir is to make to portland next month the inference that we are assuming false colors in using the name of mormon tabernacle choir is wholly unfounded when we first made application tor an appropriation to the utah fair commission there was at that time an impression among some suit lake people including professor stephens that we were using the name kofl the salt lake organization to procure the appropriation professor stephens personally investigated the matter and found that appropriation was asked for the ogden choir what we most desire and every effort will be directed to create that impression Is that it be known that it is the mormon choir from ogden utah and not the salt lake organization if the words ogden utah have been omitted in designating the choral organization it has been wholly without authority from the promoters of this trip we are going to portland in response to an invitation extended our choir from hon C B boothe executive chairman of the national irrigation congress to sing the irrigation ode written by professor john J mcclellan who will accompany the choir mr boothe is perfectly well aware that it is ahe ogden choir because he personally tha invitation vi tation and because the associated press dispatch of yesterday did not designate which mormon choir it was that would sing the irrigation ode Is no indication that we had any desire to assume the name of some other organization we hope to be musically dative of our city and state and when all Is over we would be unwise indeed to desire to gipe the honors to any other organization we want it all ourselves hon fred J kiesel who has made possible the trip of the choir and who la the gentleman quoted by dispatches as saying the mormon tabernacle choir would go to portland when seen this morning gave evidence of the humor of the situation in that he has been made an innocent party to offering any of tense to the salt lake choir the words mormon tabernacle were used by chairman boothe of executive committee of the irrigation congress without a knowledge of the fine shade of nomenclature which differentiates ferenti ates the ogden mormon tabernacle choir from the salt lako city mormon tabernacle choir said mr kiesel 1 I recognize that the salt lake choir Is preeminent pre eminent in its sphere and that it is almost next to the ogden organization in musical talent but a little pleasantry aside the ogden choir is not seeking 16 parade under false for it is our local organization which mr boothe had in mind when he gave the interview to the associated socia ted press and no harm can come to either the ogden or the salt lakee choir if the world at large does not readily understand that ogden and not salt lake singers are to render the irrigation ode at the congress in portland those who attend under the impression that the choir from salt lake Is to sing will not I 1 warrant go away at all disappointed because the singing is by our choir ogden has no intention to steal the name of the salt lake organization the local choir prefers to ba known and advertised as the ogden tabernacle choir the salt lake herald says considerable reeling has been aroused among members of the salt lake tabernacle choir which claims the exclusive right to the name mormon tabernacle choir by the persistent reports in the dispatches and otherwise that it Is the mormon tabernacle choir that is to go to portland next month to sing tha irrigation ode at the irrigation congress and to sing at the exposition utah day it Is the ogden tabernacle choir that Is to go to portland and the salt lake singers assert that they have ft on the right to tho name of mormon tabernacle choir and that they have given that name a national standing they went to the worlds fair at chicago wd sang in the cities along the way they made three trips to california and they have sung to hundreds of thousands of tourists in this city they do not now consider it right for any other organization to travel under their hard earned reputation avan stephens the leader of the salt lake organization said last evening 1 I object of course to the ogden choirs going to portland as the mormon tabernacle choir wo have earned the right to that title having used it continually for the past twelve years and having made it known to the world personally I 1 am not inclined to lay blame to anyone for the use of name but it has been used before in connection with the ogden choir and now it Is being used again th use ol 01 abo name naturally causes resentment among the mormon tabernacle choir after they had agreed to remain at horns cheerfully when they learned that mr klesal was arranging to take the ogden choir to portland the feeling Is intensified by the fact that the ogden choir Is taking professor J J mcfiel lan our organist as their accompanist personally I 1 am doing my best to allay the disappointment among the salt lake singers by arranging an early spring trip to southern california for our choir I 1 havo nothing but the highest esteem tor the members of the ogden choir would regret it deeply it any ill feeling should spring up between the two organizations at the same time I 1 think that justice demands that the ogden singers go to portland under the namo of the ogden tabernacle choir or some other besides the one that has heretofore been used exclusively by the salt lake organization the Deseret News says the statement that president smith of the mormon church will be on program Ls hardly correct that is nothing is known of the matter at this time president smith has been urged to attend and take part in the deliberations erat ions of the big gathering but has not yet seen his way clear to do so john henry smith a stalwart in the meetings of the irrigation congress each year however is expected to be present and participate prominently in what will bo done other leading utah citizens will also be there and at present the outlook is for a larger attendance from this state than at any session that has been held beyond its borders regarding the communication from hon fred J kicmol that is referred to in the concluding paragraph of the associated press dispatch it Is not likely that gentleman designated it as the mormon tabernacle choir as it is well known that it Is tha ogden choir tor which mr klesel Is working eo hard and which Is going to attend the fair and sing the irrigation oda by professor mcclai lan who is to accompany the ogden singers to portland and assist in the rendition of the ode while the sweet singers in question should not be confounded with the tabernacle choir of this city it must not be interred that the portland people will not get a good organization for they will and they will hear such singing as they probably never heard irom a choir before three new cases filed in the district court three new actions were filed in the district court today A E anderson company brought suit against H J toller and F E chulds for the sum of for goods sold and delivered valentine gideon is brought to town Is a question that la now bothering the police USE WATER OH BEETS that Is the advice of a weber county farmer there seems to bo quite a talk about flies on beets and blight on tomatoes and questions have been asbed by persons from a distance it the grain is affected and it fruit Is a failure and by abo inquiry a person would come to think that utah Is in a bad fix weber county included in regard to grain crops as a rule they are very good in many places the pear trees are suffering badly from the blight and many trees are dying in regard to the tomato crop it is suffering from the blight and many patches are practically gone but the sugar beet crop as a whole looks well the flies are invading some fields they do most damage where the beets are dry and short of moisture A farmer and beet ralser said to this paper today 1 I mould suggest to the farmers not to their water on tomatoes that are a failure but to put the water on the beets where flies aro on them and the beets will pick right up there Is no use of standing and wringing our hands but look after tho beets let them have a drink while there Is plenty of water in the ditches and you will get better satisfaction this fall when the check comes in on the day of each month the beets have been that the farmer could rely upon for a lift in abo tall season and my faith s this fall will see the usual flow of money so one more plea for tho beets let them have water san francisco july 19 secretary 01 commerce and labor and mrs arrived today from washington p C having como by way of portland where
