Show CANNOT PUNISH EDITOR albany N Y july 17 the assembly tonight spent nearly the whole evening in coming to the conclusion that its proceedings in reference to the allegations in the new york press 0 a alg lobby boodle and improper political influences in the hooker case had thus far been in excess of the powers ot the joint session the final decision was that the case of editor wardman and his assistants on the now york press must begin all over under at least a new form of subpoena interest centered in the report that the legislature leaders would attempt the punishment of editor wardman for his refusal to answer questions for the expressions of his belief that improper influences were at work in behalf of justice hooker no such attempt was made for the very jurisdiction of the session was challenged at the outset by managing editor john A hennessy of the press in his refusal to obey a subpoena and the whole matter went over for at least another day jn defying the legislature which he did by letter mr hennessy said he declined to obey the subpoena on the ground that the extraordinary session had no power to inquire into any matter except that designated by the governor the hooker case sir hennessy will now bo subpoenaed under the form provided tor in the special rules of the special session which subpoena will definitely require him to go testimony relative to the hooker case |
