this morning alfi had breakfast while eating mrs kenyon came in and informed us that the portland fire boat was preparing to give an eahl on the willamette just below our homo we all ran to the back porch where we had an excellent view of the boat it was a good sized boat and threw nine streams of water feet high at first we thought this river fire drill was or our benefit but soon we discovered tho cause atthe wonderful performance as three big steamers camo down the river with 1500 doctors who had attended a convention at the fair dr joyce was here but we failed to meet him mr glasmann was looking for him and said we would have a lively time it we found tho doctor but fate was against us tha doctor got scared when he heard we had arrived and left tor home without taking in the great free excursion up the columbia river given to the doctors by the people of portland after the exhibition we once more visited the fair grounds to see it wo had overlooked anything worth seeing and to take a setout peep at the an gallery and to soe the lifesaving life saving exhibition hibi tion it was a grand display of how lives are saved in wrecks and in case of boats capsizing from there we a beautiful painting called the white slave this Is by tar uie most beautiful painting on the fair grounds and Is valued at we next visited the or Ss eang telephone here we could see tb person with whom we were conversing by telephone at lunch time ws asic mr A H gunnell who went with us to the places mentioned above and was with us until the next day at noon we also met dr and arsi B rich mrs charees deigan and mrs kate B anderson having seen everything on the fair grounds we took one last look and left for the city where we saw many wonderful hangs such as old furniture specimens of curious birds and animals etc a collection superior to any aj the worlds fair from there we went to the ore conlan building which Is one of the most beautiful buildings in portland we climbed up its tower which Is 1289 feet above the sea level we then left for our portland home to get a few hours rest before going to the marquam grand theater in the evening wo enjoyed the play ran sons folly by frawley very much after which we went to the portland hotel which la the largest and most beautiful hotel n portland asro we had refreshments and listened to music by the band after inspecting the building we again took the car for our portland hornet just a word about our portland home mrs samuel J kenyon late from salt laje city I 1 a widow with a large family the kenyon hotel in salt lake city was named in honor of her husband she has a beautiful modem home here with a porch or veranda on three sides of the house situated on a bluff just above the willamette river giving a splendid view of the river as well abot the city of portland andi surrounding country mrs kenyon iw s just like a mother to us she served us a splendid brea it fast each morning and made us all feel at home and we cannot say too much in praise of mrs kenyon and her home while fsr home Is not as close to the fair grounds as others yet we always secured seats in the car while those close to the fair had to wait sometimes for hours to catch a car not already overcrowded we are getting tired because air glasmann keeps us going from 8 a m to 11 p m signed GUNNELL on the seashore editor standard on arising this morning we found it to be very cloudy and after eating breakfast wo packed our clothes ready tor our grand trip to the pacific coast we took the street car to the steamer landing where we left our baggage while we went to visit the portland city park and found it to bo very beautiful and interesting the main features being the beautiful flowers which it contains and also tho birds and wild animals from there lawent to the famous watson restaurant one of the best in portland where we enjoyed our dinner very much after dinner we went to the steam er landing and boarded the fi teamer potter the finest on the columbia river we sailed for several miles down the willamette river then from there into the columbia on whose banks was seen the most magnificent scenery we found the people on tho steam er to be very sociable with tho assistance si of a pianist we had some very fine singing until supper time when our bishop called us down on the deck to eat we arrived at he hotel on the pacific coast at 9 in tho evening and shortly after retired for the night i the breakers hotel it has rooms and la the befit on the north pacific coast it was destroyed by anre last fall and was rebuilt thi pring iho entire building and being new the hotel Is fire proof and is located at the one spot on all ho coast that rises above the sea level the site is most beautiful for ocean breeza is present ay day and all night the great pacific ocean Is visible from lie rooms of the hotel and the water when the tide rles comes within feet of the hotel mr J M arthur the genial host makes it pleasant for all bis cuesta and his rates are very reasonable reg the breakers hotel la more a great family home than a hotel the bathing is delightful and refreshing though the weather was bad when we were at the breakers hote lahd miss adlle gunnell mr glasmann and his boy were the only ones who had the nerve to faco the surf which was rolling very high miss gunnell want ed to live in the water and demurred when told she had been in long enough twenty four hours we spent on the pacific ocean we all wished it could be a month along the beach near the breakers hotel many wealthy portland citizens have erected cottages and spend the months of august and september on the coast the nights sleep at the breakers was very refreshing we used an extra cover signed KATIE MILLS july 15 1905 editor standard on the side ot the pacific ocean stretching from fishing rocks to leadbetter point is north beach at low tide from to feet elds 23 miles long and the sand is so compact that a carriage or wagon scarcely leaves a trace upon it scattered along the beach are hundreds of cottages and hotels in which summer life Is a pleasure from the opening until the close of the season the thermometer rarely goes above 80 degrees in july or august but light wraps fires morning and evening are comfortable during tha season along the ridge of the beach within yards of the breaker hotel affords a splendid view of the pacific excepting where small but beautiful groves shut from sight the vast body of water as it rolls and breaks upon the miles and miles of sandy beach along the entire length of the beach are lively little villages where the rates for accommodation are reasonable and vary to suit the visitors in addition to the pleasure of the seaside were large waves dashing upon the seashore where we walked several miles gathering beautiful clam i shells wo also had an enjoyable I 1 amo bathing in the waters of the pacific floating upon the waves at the breakers we found one of the most beautiful hotels on the coast known as tho breakers hotel in which we stayed over night and all one day signed META WRIGHT july 16 1905 falls of columbia river editor standard after our enjoyable time at the breakers hotel on the pacific coast we boarded tho steamer potter for out trip back to portland after viewing the picturesque scenery along ther lver by light we went to our berths and retired for the night the next morning we found ourselves again in the beautiful city of portland which la rightly called the rose city we lift the steamer and took the street car to tho depot after eating breakfast in the depot dining room we got on board tha allende pullman palace sleeper and started on bufi journey homeward mr glasmann was fortunate to secure lowr berths for all L k most of the country through which we passed was very beautiful especially along the borders of th columbia river at the alda of banks we rods for aboud miles so close that we could look from the car window almost directly into tho water below the first feature oc pur trip was the historic multnomah nomah the grandest of all columbia falls at tha very toot of which the day trains maka a alve minute stop that passengers may leave the cars and from a specially constructed ted platform behold the beautiful spectacle as it tumbles over the top of a precipice feet high gordon falls bridal veil horse shoe and latourelle Lato urella fallar each different and fascinating follow in succession on until reaching hood river city every mile Is so full of interest and surprises that the memory of all other river trips sinks into insignificance the points of interest came so thick and fast that there is scarcely time to enjoy one before another appears on eithur side tower huge preci apices while more than twenty cas cades bewitching and beautiful halt hidden by tree and alne race over verdure clad walls of rock far up on the mountain slopes the dense dark forests stand out in pretty contrast to the crystalline water below the large trees logging camps and sawmills of oregon are a series ot surprises to tourists and lumbermen from eastern regions the next station was hood river city centered in delightful and charm ing surroundings and Is a prosperous and enterprising little town noted for its delicious fruit and berries and is also the place where the lost girls were found on the down trip the next feature on our trip was the famous hot lake for untold ages the springs have poured forth their volcanic heated katr chero could be seen steam arising in clouds from the lake making a beautiful sight the locality has always been known as the big medicine camp of the indians the springs have been known to white men for one hundred years discovered by exploring parties from the mouth of the columbia river the wonderful curative power ot the water has proven io rolia culous and the demand for accommodation a has been so groat hat in place of the small hotel of a ago a handsome and costly sanitarium now rests at th foot of the mountain spur and overlooks the granda ronde valley we passed through baker city which Is the center and metropolis of the greatest mineral the pacific northwest where nearly every valuable metal la found i on our way we passed through the umatilla indian reservation many tepees and tribesmen being seen along abs tbs way the gaudy blankets worn by the braves presenting an interesting and striking appearance shortly afterwards we retired toe the night when we awoke next morning we were in the city of nampa which Is a railroad center everything looking fresh and green from there on wo passed through many sma n towns all of which looked very prosperous wo arrived in ogden at 7 chero many friends were waiting to greet us and
