Show CAUSE OF BLIGHT remains a puzzling problem to the farmers because of a blight that has attacked the tomato plants utah tar mers who have made a specialty ot raising the fruit will suffer a serious loss while the canning factories will run a much shorter time than usual at present it Is not known lust what disease jias attacked the plant but several who have had experience with tomatoes in other sections state that the disease appears to them to be what Is known as the southern blight this Is of a bacterial nature far which there is no known remedy and in order to exterminate the disease it Is necessary to rotate the crop following the rotation the succeeding year with seed from a section in which the blight Is not prevalent As a result of the blight there has already been an advance in the price of the canned article with the promise of another advance if the crop is further injured tho curtailing 0 the output has naturally increased the cost of canning per box and it is in the canning that the companies will cut into their profits in speaking of tho blight one of tho representatives of a large canning firm stated that alle it was true that the tomato crop had been quite seriously damaged it was also true that the crop had not been as seriously damaged as had been reported he said that as to the nature of the blight many of the farmers ft ere at a loss to know aust what the disease was all sorts of theories have been advanced but the true solution as to what alls the plants has not been found samples of the diseased plants have been sent to the state agricultural department part ment which is investigating and until they report those interested can do nothing but guess in anticipation of an advance in price eastern dealers are placing large orders for the goods at the present price which it is understood will be advanced in a few days |
