where we had a fine supper after supper we were very tired and returned to mrs kenyons having spent a very pleasant day signed LILLIAN NEWTON HIGHT on the grounds of the school tor the deaf and blind there is in bloom a night blooming careus or flowering cactus which Js attracting considerable attention only once in a great number of years do the cereus plants bear flowers and then they bloom but tor a short while cereus is called so from its close resemblance to the columnar shape of a wax candle it is a native of western america from california in north america to chill in south america and is cultivated principally for the beautiful but short lived flowers that it bears the plant has absen known to attain a great height in some cases the plant growing as high as sixty feet driggs RETURNS school for deaf in ogden has excellent name superintendent driggs of the state school for the deaf dumb and blind has returned from morganton Mor ganton north carolina where he has been attending the national convention of the teachers of fhe deaf and blind in speaking of the convention mr driggs said that it was the best evet held in the history of the association both in point of the number in attendance and work accomplished there being over SOO teachers and principals present the convention which lasted tor six days was given up to the reading and discussion of the various papers on methods for teaching the deaf dumb and the blind the greatest discussion was on the oral methods of instruction which in this country has been in a more or less experimental stage it was the consensus of opinion that the oral method had come to stay and it was recommended that it be introduced more largely in the schools in the discussion of oral methods mr driggs led the argument of those in favor in support he pointed out the fact that whereas eight years ago the utah state school had but eight students in the oral department it now had forty eight and was constantly increasing in size while in the south arr driggs secured the services of two of the most competent oral teachers in the country tor the utah school they are bettey bowles and miss mary lynne both southern young women and both college graduates they had offers from eight other schools but the reputation of tha utah school influenced them in deciding to come here Two years hence tho association m ogden and the reputation which the school here has throughout the country insures the largest gathering in the history of the organization few are aware of the fact that the school ranks among the first six in the country and that the methods in vogue are copied in nearly every other school the convention io bo held here means much to ogden but U means much more to the school tor it will show the country that in the west there are educational institutions that compare favorably 5 with any and ex eel many while the convention was in acs acion all of those in attendance were entertained at the school while the people of the town displayed that true southern hospitality for which the south is noted and vied with one another in entertaining tha teachers when the association meets in ogden it is planned that the delegates be entertained at tho school where all the meetings will be held 1 |
