TROUBLES effort being made to select a president new york dec S two conferences held yesterday by the committee on nomination and pacification appointed by alie trustees 0 the mutual life insurance company to bring about a settlement of the differences between the two faction in the board over the election of a permanent president frederic cromwell the Mutual 3 temporary president made public the jamea of ther full committee as fol iowa T gerry chairman james K jarvie stuyvesant fish H truesdale True edale and dumont charke sir cromwell said uiese men had been elected to straighten out the tangle in the board he hoped the matter would be cleared up in time tor the meeting of trust today and pressed tor an opinion as to the abilla of this being accomplished he intimated thai he looked for such a result when the members of the committee met at noon ahoy went at once to mr office and the conferences which followed lasted until nearly 4 after the committee left als office mr cromwell said the discussion had illuminated the situation but matters had not progressed far enough to wan ant any prophecy as to the candidate who would finally be selected following the meeting in mr office the committee went to the of stuyvesant fuli where it was in conference until 6 0 clock mr gerry who was the arst to leave tho meeting refused to make any statement which would throw light on tho result of tho deliberations mr fish was equally reticent i from a source which if beli eed to be authoritative it was learned that mr peabody was still a strong if not the strongest candidate for alie dancy of the mutual and that the second choice up to the time the nominating committee adjourned was fishy
