Show FLORENCE ROBERTS TOUCHED FOR letter writer who as newspaper man also david eccles and john cort from mondays standard another scheme in the grafting alno came to light here yesterday this latest disclosure shows some clever work into which the newspaper profession was brought A scheme was set to catch the man hut this tailed and he fellow escaped posing as a reporter a cartoonist a society and musical editor employed on various papers the grafter under several aliases addressed letters to several prominent persons in which he claimed that he was stranded through various misfortunes his demands were modest enough very modest indeed apparently being his limit so far he Is known to have addressed three persons here and in each instance the letters were written on paper hearing be letterhead letter head of the union pacific hotel system and the union depot company it is known that he succeeded very well in the game he attempted to work and is supposed to have since left the city miss florence roberts who came here last week preparatory to commencing rehearsals in the grand opera house was the first one addressed this was on thursday last when she received a letter by messenger supposedly from a woman asking for the sum of claiming that a sister had lost their return tickets to salt lake miss roberts did not take time to investigate the story and gave tho messenger the sum mentioned the letter to miss roberts was as follows my dear miss roberts I 1 hope you wont think any of ane less for me tor this but in my dl lemna I 1 appeal to you it does seem as it every soul I 1 know was away I 1 took my mite of a sister here from the east to ogden canyon today she succeeded in losing our return tickets here we are stranded will you let me nave and I 1 will send it to you as soon as I 1 reach the office tomorrow it I 1 can ever be of service tn my newspaper work command me sincerely COREY society and musical editor salt lake tribune residence S walker terrace P S pardon this horrible scrawl but I 1 am really flustered at our fix the success of this venture seems to have spurred the fellow on yesterday a letter evidently in the same hand writing was sent to david eccles in this instance he assumed the mild role of reporter claiming to be the mining man on the news in salt lake this letter was returned with the information that mr eccles was not in the letter reads david eccles esq ogden my dear sir you know me well a the mining man of the news tn salt lake I 1 brought my wife up for a day in the canyon in some way she lost her reticule in which were our tickets will you on honor mr eccles loan me two dollars I 1 win send the same to you upon my return out here I 1 am stranded most respectfully JOHN CALDWELL reporter residence S walker terrace yesterday afternoon john cort manager of the northwestern theatrical association stopping at the reed received the third communication which was also in the same handwriting as the other two and stated that he was going to work on the standard monday in return for the two dollars asked for he stated that he would boost all he could when he got to work the letter addressed to mr cort was as follows my dear mr con you know me through mr 1 waa for long cartoonist on the denver news and post I 1 go to work here on standard monday 1 am ashamed to ask but will you loan me two dollars to shave up and tide on as I 1 really need it ill boost all I 1 can when I 1 get to work sincerely CALLAHAN information had been received of the attempted touches that were made on others prior to the arrival of the latter letter and a baggage check was placed in an envelope and given to the boy then an effort was made to follow the messenger the lad by running was lost sight of hence the scheme tailed to work according to the lads story the man for whom be carried the note met him near the corner of twenty fifth street and grant avenue from which point he had the messenger ac company him to the union depot A diligent search tor the fellow was made later on but no clue as to his whereabouts could be learned |
