Show SURPRISE SN TESTS OF BEETS CROP NOT SO BADLY INJURED AS REPORTED sugar contents Is high and tonnage will exceed last year from saturdays standard tests that have been made by the sugar company of beets raised this year in the districts which are watered by the weber river which includes hooper roy west weber warren plain city syracuse fair west wil eon lynno and show that the per cent of saccharine will run full as well as last year although the tonnage 1 of the individual farmers will ba leas to a certain degree the beets have suffered from lack of water and where they have suffered the most it has been found that the sugar does not run as high as in cases where the beets have not suffered so much on the hole the sugar company has found from the tests made so far that the beets while they have of course been somewhat damaged are not in as bad a condition as was expected the district watered by the weber river was selected for the first test because of the fact that it was believed that that district had suffered tha most next week beets that have been collected from other districts will be tested and itis expected that they will make even a better showing the sugar factory is to start operations about sept 15 and it is expected will continue until well into the next year the factory will run full handed from the start until the last beets have been harvested and this Is in oart due to the dryness of the beets and because of the failure of the tomato crop in former years the farmers have had to stop harvesting their beets from time to time to gather their tomatoes toma toss as they ripened this year they can give their entire attention to their beets and those who receive orders to begin digging as soon as the factory starts wip hava their crop all in by cold weather the stirring up of the ground in getting out the beets before cald weather will get the soil in good condition for next year most of the beets are now ripe and to remain in the ground much longer even it there by heavy rains would in no way improve the crop although it will not injure it tho officers of the sugar company state that the tonnage this year will be greater than last year on account of the extra acres nl anted while the sugar product will be also greater |
