Show mirent men from europe meet with americans to pass upon the type of waterway across the isthmus of panama washington sept 1 eminent engineers of america and europe met today upon the call of president roosevelt to investigate and make recommendations as to the type of canal that Is to connect me waters of the atlantic and pacific oceans by the executive order last june a board of consulting engineers was constituted consisting of general george W davis alfred noble william B william H barr general henry L abbott frederick P steams joseph lup ley isham rudolph all american engineers gi henry hunter named by the british government herr eugene Tin causer nominated by the gr man government M guerard nominated by th french government and J W welcker nominated by tho government of the netherlands it is this board which assembled today at the offices of the isthmian chinal commission the members were met by chairman shanta who in a few words the belief that good results will follow their deliberations board of consulting engineers will havo all the data hit has been collected y the commission bearing upon the subject this data may be considered sufficient by the board to determine whether the canal should be constructed with locks or should ba a sea level canal and if the former should bo recommended then details as to the character of the locks will be taken under discussion the recommendations ions will not be final but will be made to the isthmian canal commission which in turn will use its own judgment in a report to the president the final conclusion as to the type of the canal will be settled by the president and congress in calling the meeting of the board of consulting engineers the president directed that in case there was a difference of opinion among the members there should be a minority report it also stated that the board might visit the isthmus before making its final report if it should be necessary the board of consulting engineers will not have referred to it detailed questions of engineering connected with the construction st of the canal after the type has been determined beyond making recommendations as to the type of canal together with suggestions as to the methods of constructing ting the lock canal its duty as at present defined and understood by the commission will cease the executive work of the canal commission haa been much simplified by the selection of mr stevens as engineer previous to that time the duties of the commission as an executive body were distributed between chairman chief engineer wallace and governor magoon chairman having a general supervision of the work wallace was a member of the commission but when john AV stevens was made his successor as chief engineer he was not made a member of the commission but was employed by mr and the engineering and construction work is under his direction instead of tha Rtin eral supervision of chairman chief engineer stevens la not a member of the executive board of the commission while the engineering work will be under the immediata supervision of mr stevens he will be assisted by a committee on engineering gi such problems of a technical character as mr deserea to be worked out will be submitted to the committee of engineers the problems which will be submitted to the engineering committee will not ba numerous until after the type has been determined although it la expected that ohp board that Is to meet today will avail itself of the experience and advice odthe engineering committee on account of the
