Show YELLOW FEVER the deaths from yellow fever in new orleans number out of a total of this Is a lower per cent of fatalities than during epidemics in the past in there were cases with deaths numbering this Is at the rate of one abath in tour while the ratio now Is one in six I 1 he struggle of the government forces to rid new orleans of tho terrible disease is being watched with great interest the physicians are working on the theory that yellow taver Is not spread by contact but that a mosquito keowns the after biting a yellow fever patient inoculates ocul ates those bitten by it and in that way transmits the disease this theory was first advanced by dr carios finlay a cuban physician and was put to a test by tho american army doctors when the american forces took possession of havana two experiment peri ment hospitals were built one in which the mosquitoes were allowed to bite the patients tha other in which the mosquitoes were carefully excluded but clothes from yellow fever patients v ere made part of the bedding of undergoing the test of 13 in the mosquito hospital 10 were attacked by the disease ot 13 in the other place none took yellow fever this proved quite conclusively that the mosquitoes aers the disease conveyors and a campaign of extermination was begun all stagnant pools were covered with a film of coal oil and the larva of the mosquito destroyed screens were used and within a few months havana saw the last of yellow fever tor the first time in years this same campaign Is now on in new orleans and it Is expected that when the mosquitoes are well eliminated the yellow fever will disappear as it did in havana |
