Show WAS A POLITICIAN. New York, July 25. Herman Rosenthal, Ros-enthal, the murdered gambler, gave to Governor Dix the greatest majority the Democratic candidate received in any single district in the election of 1910. Rosenthal was the Tammany leader in the Nineteenth election district dis-trict of the Third assembly district and when all the votes had been counted that district proved to be the banner Democratic district of the entire en-tire stale. The votes cast, or at least counted for ?J1 tho"1 other candidates against Governor Dlx in that district did not number a dozen. Rosenthal wasi known as a great lellance of that party when some of the Eact Side districts, which had been controlled by Tammany leaders for generations, showed evidence of an inclination to 3eek a new political boss of the race that had driven out the population of past years. Efforts to discover the Identity of the man who plotted Gambler Herman Her-man Rosenthal's death have been balked for the time by the failure of the police to round up the gang to which they are thought to belong. With the exception of Harr'v Val-lon, Val-lon, not one of the gray automobile's passengers has been arrested since the killing nine days ago The grand Jury planned to continue contin-ue today its investigation into the gambling charges made by Rosenthal and probably will recall Otto Aversi. the chauffeur, who drove Police Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Becker around town tho night of tho murder. It has been learned that Aversi, after af-ter .his recent testimony before the grand Jury hurried to Becker and told him all that he testified. Police Inspectors HayeB and Lahey are under subpoena to appear today. There are no indications that Police Lieutenant Becker has decided to waive immunitv District Attorney Whitman today scored what he bolleves to be two important im-portant points in the Rosenthal murder mur-der case. Tho first he counted when John J. RolBlcr. otherwise known as "John, the barber," previous to the arraignment on a perjury charge, made au affidavit regarding "Bridgie" Webber's connection with the ca3e. The second, even more Important, came in the announcement that V.M1-llarn V.M1-llarn Shapiro, chauffeur of the "murder "mur-der car," would turn state's evidence. telling all he knew about the case thl. afternoon. Shapiro's statement Is expected to do much towards fixing fix-ing the responsibility fr Rosenthal's murder. Relsler's affidavit stated that he and his wife wero near the hotel lle-tropole lle-tropole on the night of the killing. "1 went over to wheiV) Rosenthal's body was lying and observed 'Bridgie" Webber running away from the scene of the crime," said Reisler. "I naked a man known as 'Kid' Lewis what Is 'Blrdgio' running away for? "I did not catch IjcwIb' reply." Lieutenant Becker, who was invited by the grand jury to appear and give testimony, made his appearance in tho criminal courts' building and announced an-nounced he was ready to testify He went to the district attorney's office and there waited with Lieutenants Costlgan and Reilly, who had responded respond-ed to Invitations to be escorted by District Attorney Whitman Into the grand Jury room. |
