Chcvers, local representative of tho Harrlmnn lines, savs reforms thnt will be a great aid Co both the shipper, and the railroad, are being worked out by the truffle and claims departments of tho Southern Pacific company. One of the Important features fea-tures of this campaign Is to be an nttempt to do away with overcharges. Ho quotes E. 0 McCormlck, vice president pres-ident in chargo of traffic, as stating- "A railroad would rather spend two dollars to avoid an overcharge than half that sum In adjusting one." One of tho common causes for ovorcharge claims Is tho failure of tho shipper to properly describe the article on the shipping ticket, and Is such cases the bill of lading carries erroneous information. Claims, In many Instances, arise from causes beyond the control of tho railroad company, and can bo avoided only through tho actlvo interest inter-est and co-operation of shippers. An-othor An-othor cause for overcharge claims Is Illegible and poorly written tickets and bills of lading. The use of abbreviations ab-breviations also makes a great deal of trouble. Frequently these alleged overcharges aro really undercharges. Proper description of tho article shipped Is one of the best methods of avoiding overcharges, say the railroad rail-road offclals. It means much delay to the shipper whon the railroad company com-pany has to adjust these, and the company Is able to save much of this delay and cxponse, principally by having tho agents and shtppers see that proper descriptions and proper addresses are well written or printed on tho shipping tickets and bills of lading. oo |
