Show WANTS CASH FOR WINDING A CLOCK The city commissioners this morning morn-ing passed a .resolution providing for tho opening of Porter avenue between Thirtieth and .Thirty-first streets, notice no-tice of Intention having heretofore been published. Tho avenuo lies botween Adams and Jcfforson and is to extend from Twenty-eighth to Thirty-sixth streets, but It has not been opened tho entire distance. The aenue Is to be G6 feet wide. The city auditor presented a claim of tho J. S Lewis company in tho sum of 59G" for "winding a'nd care" of the "tower clock" in tho city hall building covering four years, from 1908 to 1912, at $2-1 a year, and tho matter was referred to the department of public affairs and finance, Mayor A. G. Fell. The auditor slated in his communication communi-cation to the council that there Is no contract for the "winding of the clock on file and that tho record shows that $20 was ordered paid by Ui5 city council for 1909, the amount having been paid. The auditor Is at a loss to know what to do with the account. The petition of property ownorB on Park avenuo for an arc light at the Intersection of tho avenue and Twenty-eighth street was granted on the recommendation of Commissioner J C Nye, superintendent of streets and public Improvements. A communication from Sanitary Inspector In-spector George Shorten, asking the commisploners to appoint some one to aid In his office, was referred to Commissioner Com-missioner T, S Browning, superintendent superin-tendent of public safety. The sanitary inspector, In urging the appointment of an assistant, advised ad-vised the hoard that frequently himself him-self and deputy have to be away from the office and that during that time many telephone calls come In that should be answered, often-tlmes tho communications being of great importance impor-tance to the department and of much concern to the public. He stated that a young man could bo placed In tho office who could attend not only to the general office work and the telephone tele-phone son Ice. but nlso be of material service to tho hoalth department In other ways. oo |
