S Bowcrman, of tho Emmanuel Baptist Bap-tist church, mado no reference to actors ac-tors or theaters In his morulng and ovonlng sormonB yesterday Following his bitter arraignment last Sunday night of those engaged in the theatrical piofesplon, tho defense de-fense of tho profession was taken up by William Bernard, stage manager at tho Garrlck theater, who declared In a curtain speech last Monday night that he would give the miuistor a throshlng, if necessary, in order to make him "eat his words." During the latter part of the week, however, Mr. BernaiXl thought better of his intention to thrash the Reverend Boworman. and instructed his attorneys attor-neys McCrca & Rogers, to bring suit against Ihe minister for defamation of character, unless he should make a full and complete retraction of his utterances against tho theater and actors ac-tors in ono of his sermons yesterday. A letter was prepared by tho attorneys at-torneys and sent to tho Reverend Bowerman Friday, advising him of tho step Br. Bernard had taken. When been Frida night, the clergyman had not received the letter and expressed an unwillingness to learn Its contents from the copy in tho possession of the TTibuno. Ho further said that Tie did not intend to reply to tho attack of Mr. Bernard, nor refer in any way to his remarks of tho previous Sunday. Since nothing was said yesterday, and since tho minister reiterated his intention of saying nothing concern- ' lng the legal action contemplated by Mr. Bernard, it is expected that the ""Reverend' 'Bowerman will Ijc haled into court, If Mr. Bernard so advises his attornoys. - |
