Show STREET CAR COMPANY IS POOR President David Eccles and other officers of-ficers of tho Ogden Rapid Transit company met with members of the city council as a conference committee last night to discuss the questions of removing the trolley poles from the center of the streets, the grading of the roadbed of the company in the paved districts of the city and the proposed extension of the Wall avenue ave-nue line beyond Thirty-first street The residents of the district south of the Bamberger road on Twenty-first Twenty-first street have repeatedly petitioned the council to force the Transit company com-pany to extend its Wall avenue line, it being claimed that the franchise which the company holds provides that that sliould be done as soon as the Bamberger people completed 'the overhead crossing on Wall avenue. The crossing has been completed for some time and, the people claim, they are entitled to car service under the acreoment. The officers of the street car company com-pany explained to the committee last night that during the years of 1909 and 1910 they expended over half a million dollars In the improvement of the road, making the extension to Brigham City, Flaln City, to the Hermitage Her-mitage and on Wall avenue; that thev also placed stone grading on South Washington avenue and on Twenty-fifth Twenty-fifth street; placed automatic switches at the intersection of Washington Wash-ington avenue and Twenty-fifth street, and did many other things iby way of improvement that were heavy -financial drains. It was also stated that no dividends are being nald by the -company and that tho officers, except the manager, are not being nald a cent for their services. Mr Eccles said that if the company were compelled to make the changes now suggested by tho council, that it would virtually deplete the treasury and that bankruptcy bank-ruptcy would stare the company In the face. Superintendent Ballev states today that business is very slack this year, the rece'pts falling short of last year's receipts by considerable He says that retrenchment is absolutely necessary and that the first step in that direction will be taken within the next few days by changing the time schedules on all the street car lines The Twenty-fifth street service will be changed from twelve minutes to fifteen, the Twenty-second service from twelve minutes to twenty, and the Washington avenue service changed to twentv minutes. Mr. Bailey states further that, if the citv will give the company time to replenish tho heavy expenditure of the past eighteen months, the company will be prepared to do the things requested 00 |
