Show HAS HIE RIDE;" UK IN JAIL SALT LAKE CITY, Aprij 1G: Joseph Jo-seph Cross, aged fifty years, who says he is an ordinary laborer, was returned re-turned from Spanish Fork yesterday by Deputy Sheriff A. A. Butler, charged with the larceny of a horse and buggy from Robert Plercy of Wood's Cross. While tho rig was tied in front of Schramm-Johnson's drug store at South Main and First South streets Tuesday afternoon, Cross is alleged to have, stolen it. Cross professes to be an alcohol ffser and claims that he was not In his right mind when he untied tho horse, leaped Into the buggy and drove south. He continued driving the ani- mal until he arrived at Lehi. There ho tied the horse to a tree Wednesday Wednes-day night, rolled ,up in a horse blanket and lap robe and slept until early morning. Arriving at Spanish Fork he induced a farmer to trade him a pair of horses and an old Concord wagon. Cross was also given 52.50 In the bargain. He save the farmer 50 cents of the money to purchase him a pint of whiskey. Ho was overtaken by Marshal Morris J Martell of Spanish Fork, near Payson Realizing that he was about to be placed under arrest, Cross placed the bottle of whiskey to his mouth and drained th'o contents. Aftef he had been locked up in the city prison at Spanish Fork Cross was soized with delirium tremens, and was seriously 111 lato Friday night. He had recovered sufficiently yesterday morning morn-ing to be returned to Salt Lake. |
