Show H ' QUESTIONS WITHOUT ANSWERS. H A partv of Denver & Rio Grande officials, including General I Manager IT." W. Clarke and General Passenger Agent P. A. Wadleigh I arrived in Ogden, Sunday, in a private car and departed over the H Southern Pacific for San Francisco. H That is the substance of a news item appearing in the Morning I Examiner. To us it is one of the most significant personals printed H in the news columns of an Ogden paper in months. I First, it is a reminder that Ogden remains the great gateway to H San Francisco. H Second, it prompts the interrogation: "Why did the Rio Grande H officials select the Southern Pacific instead of the Western Pacific H as a route to the Pacific coast, when the Western Pacific is a part of H the Rio Grande and is supposed to be operating trains from Salt H Luke to Oakland? H Third, what does this journey of the high officials of the Gould m road portend? H Fourth, arc the relations of the Southern Pacific and its com- H petitor. the Western Pacific, closer than a year ago when the Gould H line threatened to wipe the Southern Pacific off the map of Cali- H fornia and officials of the Ilarriinan road grew pale with rage when H any one dared to mention Western Pacific in their presence? H What does it all mean? Arc w,e about to witness a benevolent H assimilation of one road by the other? Or are the Rio Grande of- H ficials simply on pleasure bent and, being so disposed, have they H selected the Southern Pacificjas a more attractive, scenic and pteas- H urable route than their own road to the coast? |
