To the ability of Miss BIddle as an accompanist accom-panist much of the merit of the day is due Rev. Can or said in part: This Is Resurrection day. This Is Easter day, the first Christian Sabbath Sab-bath The "First Day" of the Quakers Quak-ers Tho Holy Sunday of the Christian Chris-tian today wherein wo are called no't only to lost as In the commandments of olden time, but also to worship and give unto God. ' This day is historic his-toric It was the resurrection of Jesus Christ that made It Coming to us laden with hallowed memories wo are not asked to receive it upon blind and unsifted faith. God never asks us to give him one trond of faith on service that Is not based up-, on established facts. If no resuirec-tlon, resuirec-tlon, then dead rise not. the New Testament Is false, death still Is dark and hopeless, our past based upon error er-ror nnd falsehood and our faith and Christian praise today but self-deluding vanity. Now It Is evident to all that so great and Important a fact as this cannot bo adequately treated in one sermon Whole libraries have been wrltton upon it. Destinies depend de-pend upon It. During the next few Sunday evening thereforo, wc will give he usual post-Easter series of sermons upon "Life Beyond the Grave," In which especial and lengthy discussion will be given to this central cen-tral fact of hlstor', the resurrection of Jeeus Christ. Let us glance tonight briefly at the most evident facts Tflilch prove to us that Christ did rise afi our Bible records re-cords We pass for further notice the history of early Rdmau writers wherein where-in is recorded the fact that as old divines tell us there was a public debate In the Roman senate in regard to receiving Jesus Christ as a God at Rome, because he was risen, and also from the mentioning by Tcrtulllan of "Tho Acts of Pilate." filed in the archives at Rome, in which Pllato recounts re-counts the Easter story, and we pass by also the story of the soldiers told in the gospels that while thoy guarded guard-ed the tomb of Christ his followers came and stole his body, because we do not see how if they were asleep as they said thoy were they could tell what happened We ask you to consider Indisputable Indisputa-ble facts which apply directly upon this day's credibility. Certain facts grew out of the empty tomb and these facts havo their power here today. to-day. How will you explain the Christian Chris-tian church arising at a time when It meant deadly and bitter persecution persecu-tion and at a time also when all the facts could be teBted? How did that scattered, discouraged, doubting company com-pany of followers acquire the life, love, faith, courage- If they were not convinced by positive evidence thnt Christ was risen. 'Twas not easy to preach a risen Christ In the very place where he was crucified, but they did it. What fact could account for thoir not only revived life, but their greatly abounding powers, and what fact could make them so bellevo that Christ arose that they would and did. all but one, die a martyr's death for their faith7 Only one answer, and that is that they knew he arose. Did you ever pause to consider the evidence which Sunday bearB to the resurroctlon of Christ? This day goes back to that event. It was not easy to change the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday, but this event did It. In our Sunday wo havo a continuous memorial to the resurrection resurrec-tion of Jesus Christ. A special day foundod at that day upon an error is impossible to conceive. The G. A. R. is a pi oof of the Civil war. How explain them without with-out It? Just so the elders, deacons, bishops of the Christian church are not capable of an explanation with their ordination vows apart from tho resurrection of Jesus Christ. Suppose we had no life of Washington Washing-ton in all our libraries, but that wc had the present great number of books which speak of him, tell of his work find describe the results of the war of '7G. W0 would also have tho results of that war In a new, free people. Would any doubt thnt there was a real Washington? Now apart from the lives of Christ In the gospels we have a great wealth of history, biography and other literature going back to that day. How account for this or for the now and free Christian people If Christ did not rise? They one and all say over and over that Ho did. This is lnkleed a glad Easter day. Let song, flowers and prayer each tell their story, but above all let us bo individually sure that we havo personal cause for Joy today because this Christ who arose Is our personal Christ, our personal Savior. There Is all tho difference of hell and heav-"' en between a Christ and my Christ |
