' 4- 4- 4- 4-r t-r i i Representatives of the regular Republican Re-publican organization In the senate determined de-termined to check the insurgents' demands de-mands after it was learned that President Pres-ident Taft resented the Insurgent attitude at-titude In opposing" policies recommended recommend-ed by him and their action In putting barriers in the w-ay of his renomina-tion renomina-tion In 1912 That this was tho real reason for the widening of the breach between regulars and Insurgents was freely stated by some of the majority members. That the Insurgent members of the committee did not bolt Is said to be due to the fact that tho rejection of the proposition submitted did not carry car-ry with it a decision to give this faction a less number of places than they were entitled to in accordance with their number, which is about ono Insurgent to four regulars. The action of the majority, It was said, was Intended merelv as a declaration decla-ration that tho dominant faction would not recognize a minority of the party as havlns rights under a separate organization, or-ganization, while the members thereof there-of claim rights as members of the Republican Re-publican party. After tho committee meeting both the Insurgents and regulars went into session, which continued until late In the day Plans wero made for the renewed hostilities tomorrow, when assignments will be offered to insurgents insurg-ents as Individual Republican senators sena-tors Contest Over Resolution. The contest was im connection with a resolution introduced by Senator LaFollette. ' Tho preamble states the purpose of the Insurgents as follows: "Whereas, as there Is a division among tho Republican majority, some of whom are known as progressive Republicans Re-publicans to wit: Senators Clapp, I.a Follette, Bourne, Borah, Brown, Dixon, Dix-on, Cummins, Brlstow, Crawford, Gron-na, Gron-na, Poindexter and Works each division divis-ion being well recognized in the senate sen-ate and throughout the country as based upon clearly defined differences on important legislative measures and questions ot great public interest, and "Whereas, the Republican senators known as progressive Republicans are In the minority In the ratio of about one to four, now thcrofore, be it "Resolved, by the committee on committees that the progressive Republicans Re-publicans bo nccorded by the committee commit-tee on committees such proportional l epresentation on tho committees of the United States senate as their number num-ber bears to the total Republican membership mem-bership of each of said committees, and the assignment of one progressive progres-sive Republican upon each committee commit-tee be designated by Senators La Follette. Fol-lette. Bourne. Cummins and Brlstow. the four progressive Republican members mem-bers of the committee on committees which said assignment or designation shall be approved and ratified by the committee on committees." Resolution D'd Not Carry. The La Follette resolution was debated de-bated at length, all tho Republican regulars Insisting there was no precedent prece-dent for the recognition for a minority within the party Some ot them predicted pre-dicted the adoption of such a resolution resolu-tion would disrupt tho party as similar sim-ilar demands would have to be dealt with later In part conventions. The vote on the icsolution follows: For La Follette, Bourno, Cummins and Brlstow. Against Galllnger. Lodge, Penrose, Hevburn, Warren, Smoot and Bradley! Brad-ley! Immediately rumors spread that the Insurgents would bolt the committee and refuse to abide by the committee assignments made under any oilier plan and would seek an alliance with tho Democratic minority to overthrow the control of the regular Republicans, but apparently there was no foundation founda-tion for these reports The Democratic committee on committees com-mittees met today The minority HsLs may be ready tomorrow |
