In 190S there were 10,551 or 1 elxty-elght cases less thanin 1909. 1 In 1909 the greater part of the sa- H loons that were In operation in 1908 H were closed by the county option law. H Tho statistics compiled at the Stato 1 House wero gathered from the city 1 courts alone -and do not include cases H filed in the Circuit and Superior H Courts. Many cities handled all in- H toxlcation cases through the higher j courts. H But in order to obtain a fair idea of 1 the success of county option in reduc- H ing tho amount of intoxication the JoIlowJn,g representative twenty-onfe "dry" cities have been selected for a comparison of the two years. The records, which can .he Inspected by any one at the Stato House, show the following number of arrests for intoxication intoxi-cation in 190S and 1909 In these cities: "Wet" "Dry" Cities. 190S 1909 Alexandria... 23 23 Angola 19 24 Attica 20 13 Bedford " 323. 319 Bloomington 12S 1G5 Butler . 4 11 Connersville 35 47 Covington 44 52 Crawfordvllle 79 SI Decatur '; 9' 14 Elkhart :. ...... 31S 329 Huntington v. .... 53 , 89 Kokomo ." 21G 244 Loogootee 13 27 Marlon '. . 290 291 Muncie sz 2S0 40G Peru 55 S G3 Seymour GO 66 "Union City 54 51 Warsaw .'.. 32 32 Washington 96 101 Totals 2,140 2,479 Thus it will be seen that there- wero 339-TBore arrests in those so-called "dry" cities in "dry" 1909 than in wet 1908. This was an Increase of over 15 per cent. The decrease In revenue from liquor licenses in 1909, as compared with 190S, amounted to 201.455.06, according accord-ing to The Indianapolis Star. The Star al?o states that 556 saloons closed clos-ed in 1909 as a result of the passage of the county option law. The United States Internal Revenue Bureau at Indianapolis redently published pub-lished statistics showing that tho consumption con-sumption of liquor for the fiscal year ending Julv 1. 1910, has increased over the preceding year. These figures are on, file In the State House and the United States Internal In-ternal Revenue Bureau at the Court House In Indlanauolls. They show conclusively these things: Since the passage of the county option law Intoxication has increased In Indiana. Since the passage of tho countv local option law revenues have decreased. And since the passage of this law more Intoxicating liquor has been sold In this state. HAS COUNTY OPTION BEEN A SUCCESS? |
