"With the I.orimer resolution on tho calendar as the unfinished business I shall press it to the utmost,'' said Senator Burrows, Bur-rows, chairman of the committee on privileges and elections, as the Senato Sen-ato went into session today. "I shall ask tho senato Uo lake up the Lorimcr question at 2 o'clock, If by that time. Senator MpCumber has concluded his reciprocity speech and shall keop it to the front unU five o'clock when necessarily it will be displaced by a special order of the Senate lor oulogles on the late Representatives Rep-resentatives W. C Lovering and C. Q. Tlrrol of Massachusetts. Whenever the speaking on the subject of Lori-mer Lori-mer Is concluded I shall insist on a vote." Tho Lorimcr program shows that Senator Stone, Owen, Crawford and Root, and possibly Senator LaFollette arc yet to speak. Mr. LaFolletto's attitude is considered consid-ered a mystery. When last night he objected to fixing a dav for a vote ho intimated that there might yet bo important developments but did not Indicate their nature. Ho did not say that he would continue to rosist a vote, but It Is understood he represents repre-sents an element, which would like tho question postponed until tho next congress because of tho belief of opposition op-position which would havo a bettor chance for success On the other hand, as Senators of whatover shade of opinion on tho merits of the controversy, con-troversy, dread tho possibility of again having to explore the weary mazes of the case. Senator Stono stood first among the speakers yet to be heard. Tho understanding was that he should spoak for about an hour and a half. Senators Root, Owen and Crawford announced that thoir remarks would be brlof Many Senators felt that, but for the fact that tho eulogies on the cnlendar, a vote might be forced before adjournment today. The fact that Senator Owen has given notice of his speech on Tuesdav might be pleaded as a reason for postponement, post-ponement, but as tho program involves invol-ves tho ultimatum "speak or vote," it is believed ho will proceed at the first opportunity to present his views. There was considerable informal discussion of tho statement made yesterday yes-terday by Mr. LaFollette that h- had "sufficient reason" for asking that the Lorlmer m'ator be not closed for the presenL Although no announcement came from Mr. LaFollette on the subject, sub-ject, some of his friends said today that the Wisconsin senator hoped to procure a statement from a man "high In political circles in Illinois" who is reported to have information and data tending to connect Mr. Lorimcr Lori-mcr directly with the payment of money to former members of tho legislature leg-islature who are alleged to have been bribed. The name of the man in question has not been disclosed and it was said that Mr. LaFollette had no assurance as-surance that ho would be able to com-pel com-pel the production of tho data even if lt should 'be In existence. The senato came near to taking a vl- va voce vote on the Lorlmer ca3e to-, to-, day. j The question was put by Vice President Presi-dent Sherman, but beforo the negative vote was cast, several senators demanded de-manded the floor to speak. The senato refused, nt 3.55 p. m., to adopt a motion by Senator Stone to adjourn. The effort to adjourn appeared ap-peared to be a part of a filibuster by anti-Lorlmer forces against taking a vote. Senator Bailey annuunced that "if the filibuster continues." he would insist in-sist on keeping the case beforo the senate, even if every appropriation bill failed. Mr. Bailey, replying to a statement bj' Mr. Hale, that those in charge of appropriation bills weie not filibustering, filibuster-ing, acquitted those senators. He added add-ed that, while the country would not agree with him. he considered the Lor-imor Lor-imor case of more importance than appropriation ap-propriation bills. He said he was not sure but that an extra session would bo a public calamity. At 4:05 p. m the Lorlmer case was laid aside, until Monday. |
