From the standpoint of elaborateness elaborate-ness of staging "he Midnight Sons" is by far the premier of all attractions which have been seen at the Ogden this season. It was witnessed last night by a largo audience which tendered ten-dered Its appreciation of a production which merited It In evorv way. In addition to its magnitude of elaborateness, elab-orateness, the production requires one of the largest companies to be found on tho road today. This Is largely due to the feature scene of tho pleco, which depicts a complete theater on the stage. Tho "property" theater Is complete in every' detail from orchos-trat orchos-trat pit to gallery. The seats or tho stage theater are occupied by real people, who aro entertained by por-formers por-formers who turn their backs on the audience which came via the box-office. "The Midnight , Sons" is presented in two acts, with eight scenes. Tho piece opens with-a banquet sceno which brings applause from the audience audi-ence right from the start. Some clever clev-er dancing is seen during this part of tho net. The finale sceno of the act Is the Honeymoon Express, and represents a party on the roar of a moving train. A very natural effect patonted, being produced only in this production The third big feature scene is tho picture machine, and this feature is Is obtainod by tho, use of the moving theater on the stage, which opens the second ncL Tho buccosb of the play is largely due to elaboiato sconlc effects ef-fects for, whllo tho action and dialogue dia-logue Is quite clov.or, it would not, of Its own volition, produce tho marked approval which the production receives re-ceives ovorywhere, Thoro aro a number of well-known song hits in tho piece and several of them are 6iing with great success by Miss Alma Youlin. She has a pleasing pleas-ing voice and delighted the audlenco with "The Bllllkin Man," and "Ami--na," two of the songs which brought "Tho Midnight Sons" into the lime-UghL lime-UghL "Rings on My Fingers" is perhaps per-haps tho most popular song of tho en-tiro en-tiro piece, but It wns deprived of its effectiveness by tho poor rondltton of Miss Sophia Allen, Tho comedy work falls heavily upon the shoulders of George W Monroe, who is an original comedian, with a makeup and style of his own partlcu-" lar vintage. He has a monoIoguo'Mn the second act which is a feature of the show in Itself There is certainly one thing which contributes largely to the succcsh of tho production, and this Is the fact that it is distinctly different from all the rest Novelty will appeal to a very large percentage of theatergoers and the novelty stock of "The Midnight Sons" Is away above par. |
