Show SALT LAKE TAKES OGDENJFF MAP Tho 'following from the Deseret News of Tuesday shows what effort the Salt Lake people and papers arc doing to get Ogden taken off tho map altogether: Salt Lake is to be placed on the automobile way and Instead of gojng by way of Ogden and across the des ert to Ely, automobile tourists may come through Park City, Salt Lake and then through Eh, turn soutlvfor a short distance and' go through Carson Car-son City to San Francisco As it is now tho transcontinental road runs through Ogden and Ely to 1,0s Ange-los Ange-los and up the coast to San Francisco. Through the efforts of Gil S. Hoag, of the Ely Investment company, who Is secretary of the Commercial league of Ely, the route Is being mapped out for the Automobile Club of America. Mr. Hoag arrived in Salt Lako shortly before noon today, having so-cured so-cured field notes for a map of a new route through Utah to EJy, covering 370 miles in the actual running time of 23 hours and 15 minutes. Mr-Hoag declares that the route he has pioneered pion-eered will give tourists Iobs desert to cross, a more beautiful country to travel through, take less time and out down the mileage. To Salt Lake from Ely is the first route to bo traversed trav-ersed and mapped. The next step to be taken by tho Fly peoplo will be to map a road through Carson City and San Francisco. The 1910 route back of the Automobile Auto-mobile club of America warns tourists tour-ists against coming by way of Salt Lake and then crossing to Ely, as no route was mapped out, and tho road was declared to be dangerous. Mr-Hoag Mr-Hoag says th?t such a statement is untrue and thnt fine roads are to be tound between Salt Lake and Ely Mr. Hoag, in speaking of his trip, said: "it was a splendid trip and it would be hard to find better roads anywhere than between Salt Lako and Fillmore. About the worst road In the entlro Journey is botwoen Fillmore Fill-more and Milford, although the Wah Wah summit caused a little difficulty diffi-culty "If tho farmers would take a little more pride in their roads and keep the irrigation waters off from them they would havo splendid thorough fares throughout the stnte. They should run ditches on the upper side of the roads whore the water comes over and where It was necessary for tfte water to come across the driveway drive-way it should he boxed. This would not only be a great saving In water but would also be a great saving l'n the road tax. "The book of the Automobile club of America Is now In tbo pres3, but as 'it Is a loose loaf book this year tho mapped route through Salt Lake will appear this ye.ir. SaR Lako on the Map. "It Is up to the automobile peoplo of Salt Lake to take a hand in helping out in this matter The new road puts Salt Lake City on the map. The distance over the auto road from Ogden Og-den to Ely Is 350 miles and from Salt Lake to Ely 370 miles, so that by way of Ogden means 390 miles for persons going from Salt Lnke. The new route cuts out more desert and gives better roads. "I understand that tourists can also come from the oast by way of Park City nnd other places and the automobile auto-mobile people of this place should ' go ahead and map out the best routes in the state." Another point that is made Is that In 1915 during tho San Francisco exposition. ex-position. Salt Lake City will be right on the 'map for the tourists to the fair. |
