Show WASHINGTON IS STIRRED BY TAFT WASHINGTON, May 17.-The resignations re-signations of two members ' of the board of governors and the secretary secre-tary of the metropolitan club here, made known today following a speech by Prosident Taft last night In which he denounced "small headed men," who, in clilbs, attempt to manifest their greatness by blackballing leading lead-ing men yroosed. for membership have stirred official and social Washington Wash-ington to the pore. President Taft. who is a member of the exclusive Metropolitan, was re- ported several weeks ago to have felt ! some resentment over tho exclusion from the organization of several ncw- ly elected congressmen and senators proposed for membership iby some of the most influential men in the club. Among the men excluded was ono of whom tho president was said to be particularly fond. "People Unworthy to Button Shoes" The furv caused by the club's action ac-tion at that time had pnrtlallly died, down when President Taft last night in an address at the Jewish temple, revived the subject by. saying that he had had friends gentiles kept out of club3, "by people who were not worthv to button ,up their shoes." Tills was followed by the announce--mcnfthat--Brlg. General Clarence B. Edwards of the bureau of Insular affairs, af-fairs, an Intimate friend of Presidont Taft Lieutenant Colonel Charles h. McCawlov of the marine corps, form-erlv form-erlv a White house aide, and Captain Cap-tain T. M. Potts of the navy, had resigned re-signed their official positions at the Metropplitan club General Edwards and Captain Potts were members of the board of governors and Colonel McCawlov was secretary of the club. Difficulty of Filling Vacancies. All had asked that their resignations resigna-tions take erfect at once, but Captain Potts and Colonel McCawley later agreed to serve until next October because of the difficulty of filling their places at this tlmo ofHhe year. General Edwards, however, Insisted that his resignation be accepted Immediately. Im-mediately. , L, - It is said that the resignations of Messrs Edwards, McCawley and Potks undoubtedly means that in the future-no future-no officer in the active service ot the army, naw or marine corps will hold office in the Metropolitan cuib. Friction created by the exclusion of Senators, Representatives and other men in official life has been more or less frequent, ancf it is believed has not worked to the ,best Interest of the various branches ot the military mili-tary service. |
