Show STREET CAR EMPLOYES THREATEN TO STRIKE. Chicago, Jan. 2S. Eight thousand employes of Chicago City Railroad I company threaten to strike unless an agreement 13 reached within the next j few days on a dispute over tho inter- I pretatibn of a .clause in the working agreement relative to maximum and minimum hours of work and minimum rates of pay. The working agreement contains a clausp providing that the men shall be employed a minimum of nine hours a day and a maximum of eleven hours a day. Tills clause is interpreted by the men to mean that the motormen and conductors shall receive nine hours' pay for any number of hours of work less than n!nox hours. President Thomas E. Mitten of the City Railroad company refuses to pay the men for more than tho actual hours of work performed, regardless of the "maximum and minimum hours" clause The men complain that cars called "trippers' are sent out during rush hcirs or for special service and the trainmen on these cars get paid only for two, three, four or five hours work, as the case may be. |
