Show oo WOMAN WAS IBEGGING ON j STREET '" Mendicancy was the charge read in police court this morning against Mrs. Anna. Brown, a gray haired woman, I feeble and forlorn in appearance, who answered to the court that she was ! guilty as charged. The judge defer- i red passing sentence until her case ' could be further investigated. j j Mrs. Brown was arrested on the i I streets for begging, she having accosted ac-costed a number of persons asking for money that she might buy food. It ! was thought by the arresting officer that she might be using the money "which she begged to purchase liquor. The woman, when arraigned, admitted admit-ted that she had begged on the streets for money but contended that is was necessary that she beg to keep from starving. "Your honor," said the woman in a voice that trembled wRh an emotion emo-tion that also caused the tears to start from her eyes, "I am guilty of the i charge but I could not help begging i for I was hungry and I had no money to buy food. 1 have been sick and am still too feeble to work. 'There was nothing left for me to do but to beg or starve." If the woman's story is found to be true she will be given some aid by th city authorities. Pending the investigation investi-gation she will be retained at the-city prison. |
