Show j POLL TAX j California, by a direct vote of thej ,j.i;p!e, lias increased its poll tax to :. 5, vliich, however, does not apply j io ilos who are already paying as much as :, taxes annually. It is satu , tUat iho principal object of the tax. ;i to make aliens assist in the sup-j port of schools and therefore contri-. contri-. bute something toward the education of their own children, which are open op-en to the alian as well as the American Ameri-can children. And it is a goodi idea, j Millions of aliens come to America to better their financial condition ' and without a thuught of becoming citizens. Many of them exploit the country to the extent of their ability i and then send their earnings to the ' countries from which they came. Those among them who accumulate property and pay iaxes amounting to more than $5 annually cannot complain com-plain of the increase in poll taxes, I and anyhow it reaches the American t as well as the alien. We believe that a similar law should be passed in Utah. Our schools are always short ! of money and generally show a de-i de-i licit. These schools must be maln-j maln-j tained. It may be true as claimed, ! that a poil tax falls largely upon a I class of working people who have no children to educate, but at that they ought to be willing to assist in the education of all children of the state .1 |
