Show TURKS ARE SEEKING HID FROM FRANCE NATIONALIST GOVERNMENT AT ANGORA EXPRESSES DESIRE TO REACH UNDERSTANDING. British Influence in the Near East Declared to Be Directed Against Lste Ally. Desire a Formal Understanding With France. Washington. Frank ecknowledg-inent ecknowledg-inent by the Turkish Nationalist government gov-ernment of Angora of a llesire to reach an understanding with France for subverting British influence in the near east is contained in a semi-official statement received on April 10 from Angora. The declaration of policy of the Turkish National government is of especial interest, in the opinion of officials, of-ficials, since the policy urged on I ranee by the Turks may have bad some influence in the evacuation of Cilicia as well as in the conclusion of a formal understanding between the two governments. "Great Britain is today not only supreme in the near east," the statement state-ment declared, "but also in the world, and France finds herself under this domination. Turkey understands that the struggle which she pursues today is neither against the Greeks nor against the French, but instead against the British. The near eastern .policy of Great Britain was reported as being directed against France and that of the latter as endeavoring to maintain intact an independent Turkey. Oritici.-in. however, how-ever, was made of the pursuit by France of "certain economic interests contrary to the vital interests of the Turks." "Should France desire it," the statement state-ment said, " a solution might be found for all tlte.se questions affecting the interests of France and Turkey. Evacuation of Cilicia by France would so strengthen the government of Anatolia Ana-tolia that all plans of British domination domina-tion would in a very short time be effectively checked. The policy which Turkey henceforth will be able to pursue pur-sue will be one which will be in accord ac-cord with many points of French poh icy." |
