Show An Optimistic Business View. One of Salt' Lake's most prominent merchants said a few days ago that business in general and collections are vastly better in Utah than they were one year ago. "Business was good then, but it continues to grow," he remarked. "I am firmly convinced con-vinced that in spite of the war drains in various lines that the United States" is entering the greatest revival re-vival period experienced in a hundred hun-dred years. "Again, I believe I can already detect de-tect the good effects of prohibition. Although-it is less than a njonth old in the State, yet there is no doubt of the ultimate effects. The sudden closing up of 120 business institutions institu-tions in a town of 1 40.000 inhabitants inhabit-ants would under ordinary conditions condi-tions bring panic, but here in Salt Lake it took place over night, and j next day business moved along as serene as if nothing had happened. Of course it hurt a number of our business men; those in the saloon business, and for a short time those ; owning the vacated buildings, and a ! good many people were temporarily ; thrown out of employment. But the 'benefits so outweighed the hurt that j it appears to be a wise stroke in gen- eral. The great amount of money re- quired monthly to maintain 120 bus-finesses bus-finesses r.ow must flow into our other lines of trade. The workman can no longer take his pay check to the sa-j sa-j loon, where some do not know- when j to stop tipping the glass. Now he goes to the store or the bank and naturally enough this large monthly yay roil flow of money finds its way into more legitimate channels. "Note how the arrest records are decreasing already. If history In other proh ibi ion towns repeats it-S--1:' here, the poller: fon-e of Sal: Lake City may be cut in half in less than a year. The municipality ac- cordingly may in this way get back a goodly portion of the amounts heretofore here-tofore received in the way of licenses from the saloons and fines from driinkn. It looks to be like the dawn , of a cleaner, bitter and moro economically eco-nomically operated city." Business in general over the State is reported excellent. The early crops are beginning to come in and are starting money flowing along new channels. Deposits in the state banks scattered over Utah show an aggregate gain of more than $3,000,-Ouo. $3,000,-Ouo. Crop reports uro favorable in most lines. |
