Show THE TOWN BOARD HAS BUSINESS SENSE IF you were running a business and paying five clerks to do what one clerk could do better if he was properly equipped and encouraged wouldn't you be foolish to ' pay the five clerks month after month? That is the problem before the town board of Milford. The matter has been discussed by the members and they will discuss it further tomorrow (Saturday) (Satur-day) night if there is a full attendance. attend-ance. Of course a business man would not have to discuss such a matter more than once to arrive at a very decided . conclusion if he was spending his -own money. And he would not allow ,,the matter to lag for a full attendance of the members of -his family. But it is a little different with an official body or family such as a town board. There are personal friendships, political and social debts, and there are indifference and neglect to contend with. The latter are perhaps the strongest factors in . delay of definite action for -economy and improvement in Milford. Every fellow is so ardently chasing the dollar for his -own personal bank account that he' neglects to take the time and interest inter-est necessary for city or community work. That is no more true of the town board of Milford, however, than of many other citizens of this new country. coun-try. . The town marshal receives $120 per month, the street superintendent gets over a hundred more, the city pays a man $40 or more each month for hauling. haul-ing. One man with a team constantly employed could do all these jobs and do. them as well or better and keep in better health for he would have more exercise, and .get better pay. The new plan of the board members is to meet the condition of . a depleted treasury caused by the lopping off of saloon licenses. li-censes. The condition of temperance and sobriety now existing leaves little for the city marshal to do but work. o ' |
