Show HORSE OWNERS SAVED PANIC The panic which threatened among horse owners of Frisco this county has been averted. The death of three horses of $ Bishop Brown of Beaver City caused Mine Supt. E. Gayford 4 o the Caldo Mining Co. to send an S. O. S. call to State Live Stock Inspector H. W. Hoggan, 4 who very promptely responded by coming on the first train out of Salt Lake City to personally investigate. Mr. Gayford ac- companied him here. The own- 4 ers of horses in the Frisco mining camps were already contemplating taking their stock away from that point in order to avoid what they supposed was some contagious disease. dis-ease. County Commissioner Griffiths Grif-fiths was about to declare a quarantine quar-antine on all stock to prevent the spread of the disease. State Veterinary Hoggan's prompt action saved the day. It also saved a lot of horses by discovering the cause of the illness and death of the three horses. And it saved a lot of expense for mine owners as well as stock owners. The disease is not contagious. Dr. Hoggan states that the cause of the death of .the animals is known as forage poisoning and is the result of feeding baled alfalfa that has been attacked by the blue mold because of dampness. It is not contagious. The germs of the mold act upon the nerve centers of the animal and cause symptoms of partial paralysis and congestion of the blood cells of the brain. The brain of one of the dead animals at Frisco was removed and this condition was found to exist. The disease has been quite prevalent in different points in Utah this year. There were three deaths ol horses at Delta last Friday from the same cause. The animals belonged to the Sevier Land & Water Company. Dr. Hoggan says that before feeding feed-ing baled hay to stock it should be opened and allowed to thoroughly dry if found to be the least bit damp or moldy. The Doctor is a southern Utah man and is interested in the welfare of the stock anywhere in the State. He will be pleased to respond promptly to any calls for preserving the health of the stock of the State. |
