Show High School Notes The following students, accompanied accom-panied by Principal E. R. Moody, went to Salt Lake City last Friday Fri-day and Saturday to engage in the state speech tournament: For panel discussion Lola Davis, Harold Har-old Griffiths, Bud James and Douglas Kirk; for extemporaneous speaking Thorpe Waddingham; for orations 'Bill Kirk; for debate de-bate Frank Tribole, Jack Clements, Clem-ents, Jim Hickman and Dan Gillies Gil-lies in the men's division, and Shirlee Altman, Gae LaFevre, Cerola Heslington and Carolyn Clay in the girls' division. Over 400 students were participating partici-pating in the meet, which gave Milford students a fine opportunity oppor-tunity of brushing shoulders with some of the best schools in the state. During the first day's de-fate de-fate (on Friday) three of Mil-ford's Mil-ford's four teams went through into the finals on Saturday. It was necessary for some extra rounds of debating to go beyond the seventh in order to determine the state winner. By this time most of the state teams had been eliminated. Jim Hickman and Dan Gillies, out of the 78 teams, entered enter-ed the ninth round of debating and wen seven straight victories. The six remaining teams were matched cne against the other: Milford against East high, the latter winning the ninth round by a two-to-one decision. The Milford teams had clashed with the followin schools: Bast high (twice), Granite (twice), South high (twice), Ogden, Davis (twice), Wasatch, North Cache, North Sanpete, Weber, Hurricane, South Summit, Logan and Fillmore. Along with the speaking experiences ex-periences the debators enjoyed a dinner Friday at neon; and a banquet ban-quet Friday evening, where the speech students were entertained by a special program under the direction of Professor La Vern Bane of the U. of U. speech department. de-partment. Participation in speech contests offer many opportunities for high schcol students and such trips, where vye can contest with the best schools of the state, are decidedly de-cidedly worth-while and should be an inspiration Tor more of our students to engage in such endeavors. endea-vors. Friday of this week the final debates of the season will be held at the B. Y. U., where Milford Mil-ford high school will be represented represent-ed by two debate teams and entrants en-trants in the speech, oration, extemporaneous ex-temporaneous and dramatic readings read-ings contests. |
