Show Dead Sea Isn't "Deadly," But Saltier Than Ocean The IVad sea, lowest body of water known to man, is constantly fed by the Klver Jordan and many other rivers, riv-ers, yet Its level remains more or less constant in spite of the fact that It has no known nutlet. Lying feet lower than the sur face of the Mediterranean, the Pond sea Is tilled with water eight times as sully as the water of the ocean. This Is due In part to the fact that It Is fed by streams passing over beds of suit and partly to the fact that Its level I Is kept constant through evaporation which takes out water, but leaves the j salt behind. In spile of Its extreme saltiness. It Is Inhabited by certain types of fish which seem to find the salt no handicap. handi-cap. The hike Itself Is about -to miles long wllb widths varying from Ave to nine miles. There Is little vegetation around I the sea because rain seldom falls there. The desolale nature of the territory , surrounding It, together Willi lis extremely ex-tremely disiasteful waler, makes the name lead sea decidedly appropriate, although the ancient belief Ihat the fuines rising from It are deadly hae no basis In fuel.--Washington Star. |
