Show 1 Pacific Area Red Cross Makes Stirring Appeal Thousands of Families Rwnain In Parks; No Fuel and No Water In Places "The appeal of Governor Rolph of Calt'otnia, Mayor John Porter of l.o.-Ar.gelcs, l.o.-Ar.gelcs, the appeal of the American Red Cross, the appeal of cities in southern California stricken by earthquake that funds be rushed to all communities in the disaster area is not meeting the quick response that one would expect from a people heretofore known for their sympathy and generosity for those in distress." This terse message was flashed Monday from Long Beach, where A. L. Schafer, Red Cross manager in the Pacific area, is directing all Red Cross forces in the work of rehabilitating rehabili-tating the small home owners who have no other resources. Thousands of families remain in public parks. Among the refugees are young mothers with babies in arms, scores of small children, middle aged and elderly folks. They are being fed in mass formation. Thirty-one feeding feed-ing stations have been necessary in meeting the need since the first temblor temb-lor shook Long Beach and Compton, Friday night, March 10. Hundreds of other families have clung to their home premises where possible, improvising kitchens by placing stove trays or iron bars across bricks. These families are being be-ing supplied with food by the Red Cross and other agencies in the progs pro-gs am coordinated by the Red Cross. There was no gas for fuel and in ,-ome districts of the disaster zone, no water. Tents and bedding have also been supplied to the families who are able to remain on their own premises, until un-til such time as the homes are made sate lor habitation. Building inspectors and health department de-partment officials, finding families sheltered .in unsafe homes, also have reported this fact to the Red Cross and provsion made for them by temporal tem-poral y housing in tents. Mr. Schafer reports more than 1000 families registered for rehabilitation rehabil-itation thus far in Long Beach and Compton alone. One Long Beach woman reported she had been frying eggs on an electric elec-tric fatiron, the only equipment available. It w-as all right for a day, but its continuance for a week was -ar from pleasant. The distress of others is well visualized visu-alized by the report of the school teacher, who had gone to a friend' residence and they have been sleeping sleep-ing cross-wise, four in a bed. The second se-cond floor of the house was not habitable, hab-itable, but the family clung to the home. Mr. Schafer said, "The people needing assistance now are your friends and neighbors. They have contributed in times past to the relief of disasters in other communities. They need assistance now. They are not begging, and they never will beg. They should not even be put in such a plight. "All California cities and every community in the Pacific Area should respond liberally and quickly to this appeal for funds." April 28th |
