Show PEANESroi) .REFUGE Iinn prOFK LUUiiu i'yili Milford airport proved invaluable last week when it served as a refuge for four Western Air Express planes which were forced down h-e by bad :(lying conditions at various times between be-tween Friday and Tuesday. The first, which sought shelter here on Friday, were two southbound crafts, a mail plane piloted by Fred Kelly, and a trimotor Fokker piloted by Alen Barrio and John Carlson which got as far as Iron Springs when they ran into storms and lowering lower-ing ceiling and had to return to Milford Mil-ford to wait until the storm had abated. abat-ed. Kelly had been due over Milford at two Friday morning but had been held up at Salt Lake City waiting for the trans-continental mail. He had finally fin-ally left Salt Lake at noon and had been followed closely by the Fokker which was flying on schedule. The mail plane passed over Milford about three o'clock but the Fokker was forced forc-ed to land here for gas before continuing con-tinuing south. Resuming its flight about four o'clock, at Cedar City it met Kelly who had found it impossible to continue further than Iron Springs and who was returning north. The Fokker changed its course and followed follow-ed him back to the local airport where both planes remained until favorable weather reports were received about midnight when they took olf again and reached Los Angeles without further difficulty. On Monday the storm again made flying impractable and at noon pilot Shaffer flying the north-bound mail plane was forced to land and remain here until Tuesday, while Tuesday moning saw the arrival of Fred Kelly the first, with his boeing mail plant. Kelly was forced to remain here several hours before continuing- iris trip south. Monday probably presented the worst flying conditions of the week as there were three Western Air Express planes tied up at airports at the same time. Shaffer was here, Kelly at Cedar Ce-dar and Barrie at St. George. Last week was the first time the local lo-cal airport has been in use since August Au-gust 10 when a passenger plane was forced to remain here during a storm. |
