Show RED CROSS TO MAKE SURVEY OF CLOTHING NEED FOR WINTER Red Cross chapter? throughout the Pacific Area have beta asked by A. L. Schafer, manager of the Pacific Branch Office at San Francisco, to make a survey and determine the needs of each community in providing provid-ing cotton cloth and wearing apparel for people in distress. The action follows official word that President Hoover has signed the bill authorizing the transfer of 500,-000 500,-000 bales of government owned cotton cot-ton to the American Red Cross and that plans for its distribution are now being considered. In addition to ascertaining the supplies that may be necessary for a six months period, the survey will determine the number of volunteers that may be mobilised to produce garments and what machinery is ' available. Mr. Schafer says: Every Red Cross chapter during the World War haii its Production I Committee in sewing and knitting . thousands ofgarmnts for the sold-1 iers. Many of them have continued i with the production of garments, j baby layettes or surgical bandages for hospitals. j "In many cases the war-time , ! groups have remained intact. In all ! cases the Red Cross chapters have j the nucleus for stirting work on ; clothing, especially for women and children, and in a very short time i these organizations can be expanded : as far as the need of each commun- ity may require. "Some 300 chapters in Alaska, Arizona, California, Iduho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington are I participating in family relief by dis- tributing Red Cross flour milled j from government wheat. Prelimin- ary reports from field representativ-j representativ-j es indicate there is a need in some localities for bedding. I "The chapter survey will give I authentic information to guide distri- bution of clothing in addition to flour." |
