Show f Farm News-Notes ' By LEW MAR PRICE County A Knt Milford Valley Gets Dairy Stock With the importation of some 200 purebred and highgrade cows into the county in the past few weeks three well bred, type young bulls have been received. More than 100 head of these cows and heifers are guernseys which will form, the nucleus of thatj breed in this county. Forty head( were- registered holsteins that should j help to raise the standard of our cows in that breed. After these cows get conditioned and start going in a normal manner, Beaver Valley dairymen could well afford to make a tour of the Milford Valley and see what kind of stock is being imported to our County. Pocket Gophers Work Apparent This is the time of year when the work of the pocket gopher is most apparent. ap-parent. "Crops have been removed from the fields, and mounds are readily read-ily seen for a distance. This is also the time of year when best results from poisoning or trapping trap-ping can be secured. Food is largely gone from the infested area, and a juicy carrot dropped in the runways . of the rodent is readily acceptable. jy While the presence of the pests is readily seen mow, the real damaging results come in the summer when irrigation irri-gation water is being applied to the crop on the ground. These runways lead the wateraway so the high spots are very hard or impossible to reach, and the ground dries out almost as soon as the water is tured off, so crop yields are materially decreased by the presence of the gophers. Especially prepared strychnine for killing gophers is available in limited amount. If you expect to use it, apply ap-ply immediately so more can be secured secur-ed if it is to be needed. , Demonstrations Well Attended Mr. Carl Frischknecht, new poultry specialist on the extension service of the U. S. A. C, gave two very interesting inter-esting and instructive lectures and demonstrations on the killing and v dressing of turkeys in the county last Monday. In his lectures he explained the best methods of feeding and fattening the birds', condition they should be in before killing, and the reasons for the extreme care- in killing and dressing the birds after they are produced. He i named and defined the four classes of ff turkeys, and the four grades in each class; and also showed how carelessness careless-ness in killing and dressing could easily eas-ily reduce a- bird from prime to choice or even medium and thereby take off all- the profits that may have accrued in the six of eight months of growing the bird out. After each lecture a bird was killed and dressed demonstrating the points that had been brought out in the lec-, lec-, tures. P Two-thirds of the families in the Milford District were present at the meeting, and a very intense interest manifest all thru the demonstration. Your Herd Will it grow better or worse as the years roll by ? Your present pre-sent day herd sire will largely deter-rhine deter-rhine this for you. The T. B. test this year located several scrub and grade bulls being used for dairy purposes. Certainly such breeding is anything but constructive and will reflect as a very poor investment before many years. Several of these bulls have al-: al-: iv.uly been replaced by purebreds, and we hope that the few remaining will be sent to the shambles in the near future, placing Beaver County back in the purebred list. Remember the six "Bs" are just as true or more so now as ever before: Better bulls, bucks and boars bring bigger bank balances. |
