Show r Milford Visitors ' ' Have Narrow ,. Escape On Trip Another epic of suffering and 1 of grim1 battle with the forces of nature has been revealed here by the story of E L. Noonan and W. D. Sumpter, who were being treated Saturday in a Ely, Nev., hospital for severe frostbites and exhaustion after a 15-hour battle with snow and cold in an effort to reach aid for two other persons marooned in a stalled automobile. The pair, with Mr. and Mrs. Isa-dor Isa-dor Meyers, were returning after .spending the holidays with the C. R. Crawford family in Milford. In Spring valley, near 'Rattlesnake 'Rattle-snake butte, they found a depth of snow and dift through which they were unable to progress forward or backward. They then were about 30 miles from Ely on a road which there was little likelihood of travel in stormy weather. Noonan and Sumpter decided there was no recourse save to leave Mr and Mrs. Meyers in the car and themselves try to reach Ely. For 15 hours they battled snow underfoot and swirling snow in their faces, while a bitter wind rode against them from the north. All night they trudged through the valley, over Connors pass, and down into Steptoe valley, thence 'northward to Ely, which, they ji-eacher well along the next morning. morn-ing. They had not dared stop to rest or sleep for fear of freezing to death. Snide Ferguson, the county l road supervisor, left immediately I with aid for Mr. and Mrs. Meyers, i who appeared little the worse for their long vigil in the abandoned automobile. |
