Show Beaver County Lions Clubs Unite In Demand for Road Work For jUneinpIoyed Beaver County Men With the last large road construction job in Heaver county started, and an apparent disposition on the part of the state road, commission to let the work by contract to road construction companies, com-panies, Milford and Beaver Lions met in a joint meeting in Beaver Beav-er Monday evening. It was the concesus of opinion that this work should not be permitted to be let by contract, when there is such an urgent! need of ihaving the (money distributed among the unemployed men of the county. It was pointed out that the Bureau ot' Roads 'T in Washington, D. C, were favorable to giving such road work to local men and teams as an emergency measure to relieve unemployment, where the additional cost of such work was not excessive. Abe Murdock, through Congressman Congress-man Colton, had been in touch with the Washington bureau, giving the assurance that force account on all road work should be given consideration. considera-tion. . Senator Jefferson stated that the Lions clubs of the county and county commissioners should demand of state road commission that all the work on the 91 highway, except the oiling, be done by force account. ! G. H. Tolton, R. C. Murdock, Commissioner Com-missioner Harris and others gave talks on the seriousness of the unemployment unem-ployment situation in Beaver county and need of securing the spending of ' road money in Beaver county with i Beaver county men. i While the contract for graveling . the section from Cove Fort to Dog I Valley was let Monday, bids for two I ten mile sections from Manderfield to ! Cove Fort would not be opened until i Friday. To forestall letting these two sections by contract, a committee 1 of five from each club were appointed appoint-ed to go into Salt Lake City Thurs-j Thurs-j day and make a demand of the state road commission that the grading and graveling of these two sections be done on force account. Among those forming the committee going to Salt Lake Wednesday were F. C. Harris, Abe Murdock, R. C. Murdock, G. H. Tolton, and H. A. White of Beaver, and Geo. Jefferson, R. E. El-lingsworth El-lingsworth and O. F. Hubbell and Fred Levi of Milford. It is hoped that sufficient pressure may be brought to bear with the state road commission to have the grading on the Wild Cat Hill section and graveling from Manderfield to Cove Fort handled by force account. This would mean approximately ten weeks' work with a large number of local men, teams and trucks, the only source of revenue available for many of the unemployed men of the county to earn money sufficient to feed their families. |
