Show ' RAIS2 SOME SUGAR BEETS. J" 'brother of Virgil Kelly, ii h'kl ,(n.vr vbllsh; - ( of ur factories by the Independent Inde-pendent Sugar Co., spoke at Hinckley last week on the subject of sugar beet raising and the plan on which the Independent In-dependent Company operates. In the first place this company pays $5 per ton for beets running not less than 12 per cent saccharine. For each additional addi-tional per cent they pay $1 additional per ton. Then they divide with the fanner the profits over the cost of production, pro-duction, so that, according to Mr. Kelly, a farmer may get as high as $7 or $8 per ton for his beets: Mr. Kelly said that the land In this section was especially adapted to raising rais-ing sugar beets with a high per cent of saccharine. He believed that within six miles of Hinckley there was enough sugar beet land to keep a factory fac-tory of 600 tons capacity running. According Ac-cording to Mr. Kelly the company was ready to enter Into a bond to erect a factory If tbe farmers would guarantee sufficient acreage of beets to warrant Ita erection. While Mr. Kelly was very enthusiastic enthus-iastic about sugar beet raising our own advice would be to go a little slow this year. We think It would be a good Idea for every farmer to put In a few-sugar few-sugar beets, as much as he csn taks good care of in connection with hla other work. If you have alfalfa land turn ome of It under for sugar beer Try some on new land .and some wherj stubble has been turned under. Give as good attention to It as though you er going to get per ton for It. Measure your land accurately as ycu will know the exact return per acre, j Carefully weigh your crop when It Is harvested and have the beets saslyted for sugar contents. You will then know exactly where you are at. If thj results are anywhere near as Mr. Kelly predicts you can then prepare pre-pare As much land as you want to this tall for sugar beet raising, and make contracts for a definite acreage. The sugsr! company will also have some-tlilng some-tlilng (definite to go on, but at present It Is ill guess work. |
