Show Rome in Allied Hands Yes, no doubt, religion played just as strongly as military needs, to cause the withdrawal oi the Nazis from Rome, with only what may be termed r a "token" fight within the actual city, limited largely large-ly to the suburbs, as the main force withdrew. Snipers Sni-pers delaying action, but no actual bombardment on a huge scale, with demolition accompanying. The Allies had put the matter up squarely to the Germans "If you remain in Rome, and fight from it, the after-fault of the battering down of the sacred city will be on you." The pressure was too great on Adolph and Herr Goebels, and Rome was spared. |
