Show LETTER BOX . . . Dearest Mik, We are all confined to the troop area as a couple of guys in our comapny had a fight and one ended end-ed up in the hospital. I guess liquor li-quor doesn't make a soldier any better. I have a hell of a time getting used to this climate. This morning it was so cold I nearly froze to death and now this afternoon it is so hot that we could go around with hardly anything on and roast to death. One of the guys here was going to skip over the hill and see if they'd be a little longer catching him to send him over. He came to talk it over with me and asked me to give him 5 hours start, then I could turn him in. I told him I would if he would let me talk to him for five minutes. He sat on my cot and told me how much he missed his wife and all the plans they had made. His plans for work etc. It was nothing new to me as all the guys feel the same way and talk a lot about it. I didn't try to talk him out of it, I just told him about not being able to get a job, losing his citizenship in America (charge for all w-ho desert) and the disgrace and humiliation it would bring his wife and parents. Finally he decided to settle for a telephone call to his wife. He's a sweel kid, and I'm glad for his sake that he changed his mind. It's time for chow and since I missed it both last night and this morning, maybe I'd better go So long for now, As ever Vaughn. Letter received from Pvt.
