Show Dekker Dekker Tells Of Holland In Letter Home Dekker A. Dekker, who has been visiting his native Holland for the past six months, sent the following follow-ing airmail letter this week.: Leeuwarden, April 11, 1950 Dear Mrs. Cook and also the Chron icle: Have been looking around for some good weather but it's hard to. find it. About every day rain, and more rain. Would like to come back in May, but don't know yet. Have spent part of my time here around the Fish Hatcheries and around the clubs and if we can get a little help from the states we will have some good fishing. Have found out Holland is not perfect for a Deltan here. Have not seen a Chronicle here. Get about all the clippings from the news. But six months is enough to be here for me. The clothing and food is too high Very high. A suit of clothing about F285, overcoat about F190. Beef, F180 per lb. Horsemeat, nice and tender, about F150 lb. Potatoes 12 cents a lb. Cowfat, about F120 per lb. (By inquiring at the postoffice we learned that the florin is the equivalent to 26.9 cents of our money.) The traffic over here is very bad. Autos, trucks, bikes, have the first right. They have a couple of crossing here in the city. But if you see an auto coming better stay off the street. They do not stop. There are more auto accidents with the few autos over here than with all the traffic in the U. S. They have no stop signs. Everyone rides where he wants. Some streets are so small when a wheel barrow stands on the side in a street the auto has to wait until he is moved. mov-ed. There are plenty of fish here but well on price. But I will be glad when back in the good old U. S. The people do not know and can't figure it either -what it means what the U. S. is. Will close with this. Hope it receives you in good health. Yours' D. A. Dekker, Landbuurt 42, Leeuwarden Holland. Mrs. Mary Stoneking, Mr. Dek-ker's Dek-ker's daughter said her father had planned to sail for home on April 18, but she had not yet received word from him verifying that date. At any rate, we know he will be happy when he is home. |
