Show I mr? SOLDIER BOYS. H CacliG county and Logan City salutes you, and extends H a hearty welcome home. Some months ago you left us H carrying "your flag and our flag," and today you return H' bringing "your flag and our flag," with all its stars bright- H er than ever, and its stripes "without one stain." B Since the days of Betsy Ross, whose deft fingers first H fashioned its now familiar folds, tho stars and stripes 1 have been the emblem of this nation. Its right to wave Hf ife folds to the breeze and proclaim its mission to the B motM have from time to time been challenged, but in each M instance the sons of the republic have rallied to the stand- B ard and preserved it clean and spotless. The sons of the 1 revolution preserved it, and the boys who marched to the 1 Mexican capital returned it as "our flag." Grant defend- H -ed it and Lee finally supported it, and from then to the H tune of the war with Spain it was "our flag," the flag of H all flags. At that time it was the flag of Dewey, the flag H of "Wheeler, the flag of the boys who went from Cache B county to defend it, all fighting together as patriots and H countrymen, and again it was returned victorious. K And now, when we are boasting of a, Reunited country, ; -more rich and powerful in men and wealth than any other 1 nation on the face of the globe, while it is "your flag and w our flag," the glorious emblem of a peaceful and prosper- H ous people, another attempt is made to lower its standard, H ' to humiliate it, and perchance to trail it in the dust. At B' the call of the President you responded quickly and nobly, m -ami proffered your services in its defense. Your march H lias heen a victory and your return a triumph. Today H ifc is "your flag and our flag," and for your services in H its defense you receive its plaudits of your countrymen, H and your reward their everlasting thanks and gratitude. H Welcome home, and may this day be a memorial day H "in the history of this country, dear to our heart for th-3 H roerories it brings, for the hearts it unites, and for the B gallant spirits it returns to us who so freely gave their H ' services to the nation. And in the future service to the H nation may it cause all of us to think the highest that is H ' in us to think, to do the best that is in ub to do, and to m Iba the noblest that is in us to be. m o |
