Tho German province ot Hanover, says the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, owns 1,967 miles ot highways, o"n which ( thero are 175,794 fruit trees pear, cherry, plunT and applo sufficient If set out 80 to an aero to form an orchard or-chard of moro than 300 square miles. The' fruit raised on these trees Is ' sourco of tncome for the province, . which sometimes makes $40,000 a year by selling tho products ot this elongated elon-gated orchard. Tho province maintains a nursery ot 403 acres to supply young trees for roadside use and for promoting the Interests In-terests ot fruit culture. The profit ot a tree la very small, hut the Hanover people do not worry about that. Shado Is afforded In summer, the roadbed Is free from dost, the presence, ot trees retards the washing out ot the soil from the banks Into the roadside ditches and the attractive appearanco of the roadside stimulate an Interest In tree culture and -benefits the province prov-ince In many other ways.
