Show THE JUVENILE COURT. Tin: Rki'UIilican has had occasion heretofore to speak favorably of the Juvenile Ju-venile court. It would again call attention atten-tion to the splendid results attained by this Institution. Two years ago when tho court was first Instituted, truancy in the city schools made It necessary for tho probation oillccr to visit no less than 203 homes. This past year It was necessary to visit but .r)5 homes. In other words 240 boys and glrU have been taught that truancy is a dereliction that will not bo tolerated by society. Thus tho children cot the good of unbroken school work and aro taught tho great lesson there Is In regularity. To this may be added the good accomplished In bringing a great many parents to the knowledge of the greater obligation obliga-tion they owe their children and the schools Two years ago tho eurfow law was generally disregarded. In a trip Into flvo wards of the city Wednesday night between nine and ten o'clock but four delinquents were rounded up. Thus arc we spared the probability of such depravity as has been unearthed recently re-cently by the Salt Lake Juvenile - - " T - court. Nine-tenths of the missteps of old and young men, women and children are committed after nine o'clock at night, the hour the law say children must be In their homes. The Juvenile Court sees to it that the law Is obeyed. Thus the children are helped though the older ones continue In their winding way. By a careful watchfulness, gentle persuasion, thorough Investigation of delinquencies, authoritative suggestion, sugges-tion, and an occasional penalty, the Juvenile Court Is causing many a boy and girl to sense his duty to society, and there can be little doubt that In countless instances Juvenile offenders offen-ders are turned from a course that would Inevitably lead to crime and the penitentiary. Tho Juvenile Court of Logan Is trying to do the children good, and we believe it Is. If perchance, some parent whose child has been cited to appear feels differently, let him In all good humor take up the matter with the judge or probation officer, listen to tho explanation, and we have faith to believe that the disagreeing parent will go away not sad of heart and wrath In spirit, but an enthusiastic supporter of the court. |
