Show SUSC grapplers battle Coloradoians this week The Southern Utah State College wrestlers will have their hands full this week as they hit the road for Colorado. Beginning Thursday, they meet Adams State (defending NAIA national champs and currently ranked Number 1); on Friday night they meet Western State, and on Saturday afternoon they close out their trip against Fort Lewis and Northern Arizona. Adams State is led by senior co-captains co-captains Mike Allison (190) and Dan Yoder (126). Allison is the defending RMAC and NAIA champion at 190. Yoder is the defending RMAC champ and placed fourth in the NAIA. Another outstanding star for Adams State is Tom Cortez (118). He is a transfer from Wayne State, Nebraska, and placed sixth in the NAIA last year. Western State is a team that thesT-Birds , upset last, year, in. Cedar City, 26-18. The Mountaineers Moun-taineers coming into the match with SUSC sport a 0-5 dual record. That record is very misleading, though,. because they lost to the likes Of University of New Mexico, Northern Colorado, BYU, University of Utah and Adams State. Fort Lewis is a team SUSC defeated in early January, 27-15. Joe Taylor (134) and Jeff Winn (150) both registered pins in the match. Tony Petit (167) is the leading Raider grappler. He pinned SUSC's Phil Price in the earlier match, but Price is improving im-proving with every match. It should be a good match up. Northern Arizona just got by the T-Birds 22-20 in the T-Bird Quadrangular. A forfeit at 118 is what gave NAU the win but it should be a different outcome this Coach Joe Lopour commented on his young T-Bird squad, "I think right now we are doing a lot of things right but we're not doing them at the right time. We also need a lot of work on our takedowns." Coach Lopour has made two changes in his lineup for the trip to Colorado. They are Craig Rollo dropping down to 11R from 126 and Craig Talbot to 126 from 134. Phil Price (167), a sophomore out of Lakewood, Colorado has i been named Wrestler of the Week for the week of January 21 by Coach Lopour. Price won two matches while dropping one in the T-Bird Quadrangular and has a record of 3-5. Each week Coach Loupur and Jim Bayly (student assistant) will pick a Wrestler of the Week. Past Wrestlers of the Week: 1. Dan Humphrey (190) 2. Pete Buatti (118) 3. Jeff Winn (150) |
